School Overview • Opened in September 2010 • Grades K-12 • Grand Rapids Learning Center • Southfield Learning Center (Fall 2013) • Authorized by Grand Valley State University • As of May 2013, 2800 applications since opening enrollment in January 2013. • The Michigan Virtual Charter Academy provides services to students with 16 general education teachers, 2 Title 1 teachers, an At-Risk teacher, a Guidance Counselor, an At-Risk Guidance Counselor, 5 special education teachers, an Operations Manager, an Office Manager, an Academic Lead and a Head of School.

  3. MVCA Statistics • The Michigan Virtual Academy serves students throughout the state in 514 communities. • Approximately 9% percent of MVCA’s students have valid, current individualized education plans. • Approximately 65% percent of MVCA’s students are eligible for free/reduced lunch.

MVCA Vision Through a combination of research-based, individualized, and specialized curriculum and instruction in the home; online conferencing with a certified teacher; and access to a community of experts in science and technology, our students will emerge as confident leaders of the digital age. MVCA Mission The mission of the Michigan Virtual Charter Academy is to provide an innovative, intensive academic preparation that inspires and educates students to achieve the highest levels of academic knowledge and skills. Michigan Virtual Charter Academy embraces a collaborative partnership between teachers and parents in order to empower students to reach extraordinary heights. Extraordinary results require extraordinary efforts! Through commitment, hard work, consistency, and responsibility, every student will meet the challenge of mastering high expectations.

Learning Coach Expectations • Log Attendance • Help with organization • Help with time management • Help with planning • Assessment • Regularly check progress • Communicate with teachers and counselor • Parents of children in grades K-5 can expect to spend 3-5 hours per day supporting their child’s education. • In grades 6-8, learning coach time typically decreases to 2-3 hours per day as students become more independent. • Students will spend 4-6 hours per day on coursework in grades K-5 and 6-7 hours in grades 6-8, and 6-9 hours in high school. • HEAD CHEERLEADER!

Student Expectations • Log into OLS/LMS daily • Check kmail and daily announcements • Attend Class Connect sessions • Work in each class in each day • Provide work samples • Communicate with teachers • Master 80% of Study Island lessons • Complete Scantron, MEAP, and MME Testing • Students will spend 4-6 hours per day on coursework in grades K-5 and 6-7 hours in grades 6-8, and 6-9 hours in high school

What Does Flexibility Mean? • What Flexibility means at MVCA: • Student may choose which class to work on first each school day. • Students can access the content 24 hours a day/7 days a week. • Students can work ahead in OLS courses. • Students can block their schedules. • Students can work anywhere in their homes or wherever they have an Internet connection. • What Flexibility does not mean at MVCA: • Students may not work on one year’s curriculum over a longer period. • Students may not opt out of required course work. • Students may not opt out of K12 mandated testing or state testing.

  20. Study Island • What is Study Island? A research based test preparation program. • Why do MVCA students work in Study Island? Study Island shows significant results for students on high stakes tests (MEAP, MME, ACT) • How does Study Island work? Based on the Study Island Custom Assessments completed by students in September, November, and February, Study Island Pathways will be created for each student. Pathway assignments must be completed, and blue ribbons must be earned. Students who still struggle with concepts, will meet with his or her teacher for interventions.
