Systems • Indicate Need for Agreement on: • search indexes supported • search attributes supported • semantics for keyword searching • holding information provided • set of attributes used in configuration of clients • semantics for specifying key words

  3. Why International? • Reluctance of vendors to develop profile specs for multiple national or consortial profiles. • National Library of Canada convened group to define international profile

  4. Meetings • 2 meetings with ZIG in 1998 • not the right mix; needed input from users, not implementors • 2 teleconferences held thus far in 1999 • March and May • connecting Canada, U.S., U.K., Australia… • Goal: complete development by Dec. 1999.

  5. Basic Profile • Searching MARC-based library catalogues • using basic Bib-1 attributes • Not excluding, but delaying coverage of other functions • support of cross-domain searching and retrieval • implementation of GRS • searching holdings of museums and archives

  6. Building on Existing Work • Working with Bill Moen (TZIG) • Internationalize existing work • Z Texas Profile • based on earlier profiles: • Models, vCuc, ONE • 4 discussion papers on outstanding issues

  7. Outstanding Issues: • Definition of title and subject searches (Judith Pearce) • Draft framework for holdings (Judith Pearce) • Issues re: how to handle a follow-up search after a Scan (Janifer Gatenby) • Clarification of the use of truncation and completeness attributes (Joe Zeeman)

  8. Next Step • Meeting at Bath, 15-17 August 1999 • hosted by Dr. Paul Miller, Interoperability Focus, UKOLN • draft new Z39.50 International Interoperability Profile document • explore extending Profile beyond description of solely bibliographic resources
