  1. FGCU: Environmentally Friendly? Nikki Leone ENC 1102 Composition II 4 April 2013

  2. How can Florida Gulf Coast University expand while still keeping their promise to conserve land for the environment?

  3. Florida Gulf Coast University is growing at a rapid rate. We are the fastest growing public university in the state of Florida.

  4. As a campus, FGCU is very active. The proposition of building recreational fields has everyone talking. Many students love the idea.

  5. FGCU made a commitment to be an environmentally friendly school. Leaving at least 50% of their land for conservation. Due to the increasing population of students conservation is now under 50%. Although Florida Gulf Coast University needs room for expansion, it might be a good idea to build recreational fields elsewhere in Ft. Myers and provide free transportation for students.

  6. Now more than ever we are in the public’s eye. If our population was not growing fast enough, it will grow much faster just within the next year. Where will these students go?

  7. Although the recreation fields are a great idea, it would not be within walking distance. Many students love the idea but find this distance very inconvenient.

  8. FGCU made a promise to the community back in 2005 in their master plan that they would conserve 50% of land for the environment. They have already exceeded this. They need to refrain from building on anymore conservation land.

  9. The Gopher Tortoise’s are becoming a rare species because their kind is being threatened by environmental conditions. FGCU is one oft last places where Gopher Tortoises reside. By building recreational fields on conservation land that is putting these tortoises in grave danger.

  10. Estero Bay Agency reminded president Bradshaw of FGCU’s previous promises. They are also involved with preserving the gopher tortoises. Together Estero Bay Agency and FGCU can make a deal to accommodate both students at FGCU and wildlife living there.

  11. Money is a big factor. It would be wise for Estero Bay Agency to work together with FGCU to come up with a plan to make both parties happy.

  12. Is there some sort of compromise?

  13. The growing population of the school gives FGCU good press and a good reputation. Conservation of land also gives FGCU good press and a good reputation.

  14. Proposal • FGCU builds the recreation fields where they intended • To ensure students use the recreation field FGCU and Estero Bay Agency will work together to come up with a payment plan for buses.

  15. Buses will provide free transportation for the students to use the recreational fields as they please. This solution will make everyone happy. There will be no building on conservation land and students get a recreation field without having to use their own gas to travel off campus.
