  3. New Ideas Challenge Society • Ideas spread from Paris to the rest of France and then the rest of Europe • Ideas spread through Diderot’s Encyclopedia, small pamphlets, salons, and the courts of monarchs • The old order did not like being challenged and often engaged in censorship

  4. Arts and Literature Reflect New Ideas • Rococo style emerges to please the middle class – it was light, elegant and charming • Classical music became popular with the growing middle class. • The novel became a popular form in literature
