  1. Written in Science Composition Book B: Block/Period A: CW N: Your Name Date: 8-30-11 6 E.Q.: What is the difference between an independent variable, dependent variable, and a controlled variable?

  2. Brainstorm Written in Science Composition Book Examples from students were filled in during class.

  3. Written in Foldable under the word “VARIABLES” A variable is any factor, trait, or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types.

  4. Let’s Practice (Example) What variables can affect attendance at a football game? Written in Foldable under the “VARIABLES” tab Examples were given by the students during class.

  5. Independent Variable Dependent Variable Controlled Variable • Also called the manipulated variable. • What you test or change in the experiment. • As you change this variable, you observe what happens. • To insure a fair test, a good experiment has only one. • Is recorded in the first column of a data table. • The cause • What you will measure in the experiment • There can be more than one. • Is recorded in the next column after the independent variable in a data table. • You need more than one result, so the experiment is repeated at least 3 or more times to ensure the results are valid. • The effect • The response • Stays the same in the experiment. • Also called constants. Written in foldable under tabs: Independent Variable Dependent Variable Controlled Variable

  6. Let’s Practice (Example) Two groups of students were tested to compare their speed working math problems. Each group was give the same problems. One group used calculators and the other group computed without calculators. Answers were written in the Science Composition Book Absence or presence of calculator (whether they used or didn’t use a calculator) Independent (Manipulated) Variable: Math speed (How fast they solved the math problems) Dependent (Responding) Variable: Math problems (Both groups were given the same set of problems to solve) Controlled (Constant) Variable:

  7. Let’s Practice Students of different ages were given the same puzzle to assemble. The puzzle assembly time was measured. Answers were written in the Science Composition Book Independent (Manipulated) Variable: Age of student Dependent (Responding) Variable: Puzzle assembly time (How long it took the student to put the puzzle together) The puzzle (all kids were given the same puzzle to put together) Controlled (Constant) Variable:

  8. Homework Different tire treads Braking distance • A study was done to find if different tire treads affect the braking distance of a car. Independent Variable:__________________________________ Dependent Variable:___________________________________ Controlled Variable:____________________________________ 2. An experiment was performed to determine how the amount of coffee grounds could affect the taste of coffee. The same kind of coffee, the same percolator, the same amount and type of water, the same perking time, and the same electrical source were used. Independent Variable:___________________________________ Dependent Variable:_____________________________________ Controlled Variable:____________________________________ ______________________________________ • A study was done with an electromagnet system made from a battery and wire wrapped around a nail. Different sizes of nails were used and the number of paper clips that the electromagnet could pick up was measured. Independent Variable:___________________________________ Dependent Variable:_____________________________________ Controlled Variable:_____________________________________ The car Amount of coffee grounds Taste of coffee Kind of coffee, percolator, amount of water, type of water, perking time, electrical source. Different sizes of nails Number of paper clips picked up Electromagnet system (battery and wire)
