What is Jewish Home Lifecare? • We are a 165 year old not-for-profit agency that offers health services and assistance to elders at our campuses in Manhattan, the Bronx and Westchester. • Our 3 skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities have 1,600 beds. • Our nursing home campuses offer: • Special Therapy Centers - Swallowing, Hemodialysis, Vision • Beautiful gardens, cafes, libraries, media centers, lifestyle and religious programming and activities • Senior Housing: Kittay House, 3 HUD 202s in the Bronx

Community Services Division Care and support to keep elders healthy and independent in their own homes. • Home Care in Bronx and Manhattan • Adult Day Programs at all three nursing home campuses • HAPI Home Health Care Agency • Telehealth: HealthMonitor and Medication Dispenser Services • Solutions at Home – Geriatric Care Management • Transportation

  5. Reasons for GCD Program Creation • Need for elders to have meaningful roles within the nursing home. • Value placed on intergenerational relationships. 3. JHL’s commitment to community & youth. 4. Create a structured afterschool academic and enrichment program to support young adults pursuit of college and/or career. 5. Workforce development critical strategic issue for JHL • Shortages of geriatric professionals (eg MD, RN, & OT/PT). ‣ Reassessment of JHL’s existing intergenerational program.

  6. Workforce Statistics • There is an estimated need for 1.2 million new nurses by 2014. (CCLC, 2007) • The number of people needing personal assistance and home health services is expected to more than double from 14 million in 2000 to 27 million in 2050. (Kaye et al, 2006) • Only 8.0% of all RNs are under the age of 30. The average age of the RN population in the United States is 46.8 years. • Approximately 4.2% are Black or AfricanAmerican (non-Hispanic); 3.1% areAsian,Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander(non-Hispanic); 1.7% are Hispanic or Latino; 0.3% are American Indian or Alaska Native; and 1.4% categorize themselves as two or more races and non-Hispanic. (Minority Nurse, 2010)

  11. Family Profile 45% of students are bilingual *Other languages include Twi, Cantonese, Bulgarian, Hindi, Bengali, Soninke, Patio Creole, French & Russian.

Family Income 70 respondents (64%) fall below $30,000 **New York City Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO) places NYC poverty rates at or below $30,055 *As with all data collected, reporting of family income is optional. **(April 20, 2012). New York’s poverty rate rises. NYC Workforce Weekly, 6, 1-2.
