  2. HOW PEOPLE ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS IN LIFE Why do people set goals? Goal setting is used by top-level athletes, successful business people and achievers in all fields. Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It helps you to organize your time and resources. It also raises your self-confidence, so you understand that you have abilities to achieve the goals you’ve set.

  3. Irina Rodnina was born in 1949, in Moscow. Her father was an officer of the Soviet Army. She was a sickly child, and her parents brought her to the skating rink.

  4. Irina and her first partner Oleg Vlasov won the third prize at the Youth Championship of the Soviet Union in 1963.

  5. Irina’s next partner was Alexei Ulanov.They were coached by Stanislav Zhuk.

  6. They won their first World title in 1969. They became World champions in figure skating.

  7. They won the Olympic Games too. It happened in Sapporo, Japan, in 1972. It was Irina’s first gold Olympic medal.

  8. In 1972 Irina Rodnina began skating with Alexander Zaitsev. The music stopped during their short program at the World Championship in 1973. They finished the program in silence and earn a standing ovation and gold medals.

  9. In 1974 the pair had another coach – Tatiana Tarasova. They won six World titles together, as well as seven European gold medals, and won their Olympic Gold in 1976.

  10. Rodnina and Zaitsev got married in 1975. They did not compete during the 1978 – 79 season because she was pregnant with their son.

  11. They returned in 1980 to capture their second Olympic title together. Everybody remembers Irina’s tears – it was her third Olympic Gold, and she was already 30 years old.

  12. With her partners, she won ten World Championships and three consecutive Olympic gold medals, along with eleven European titles, that made her the most successful pair skater in history.

  17. There are people with physical disabilities. But they want to take part in all aspects of life. They try to over- come difficulties and even do sports. The practice of sport is a human right. So the Paralympics are organized. They give all people in the world the possibility of practicing sport.

  18. History of Sitting Volleyball at the Paralympic Games Sitting Volleyball made its debut as a Paralympic medal sport at the Arnhem 1980 Games. The women’s event was added to the Paralympic program in 2004.

  19. Field of play The Sitting Volleyball court is 10m long and 6m wide. It is divided into two halves by a net that is 1.15m high for the men’s game, and 1.05m high for the women’s.

  20. Sport has become a part of these people’s lives. It gives them a chance to look into the future with optimism. Sport allows to make friends with many people. It makes people forget about their problems. They develop a better appreciation of our beautiful planet. They acquire self-confidence as they don’t feel disabled any more.
