  2. As you arrive… Do Now Bell Ringer • Write down your new homework. • Update your table of contents. • Place your completed homework on your desk for me to check.

  3. Objective • Today I will review lab safety procedures & symbols. • So that I can operate safely & responsibly in the science laboratory. • I’ll know I have it when I can explain the value of safety procedures & identify important safety symbols.

  4. Key Questions • Why are safety rules important? • What can you do to stay safe in the lab? • What are some important safety symbols? • What should you do if there is an accident?

  5. Book Study • Read Lesson 2.5 on pages of your textbook, following these steps: • Scan headings and figures • Highlight key points and definitions to vocabulary words. Look for answers to Key Questions. • Fill in your notes with any answers to Key Questions that you found. • Try the practice activities to the best of your ability.

  6. 1) Why are safety rules important? • Good preparation helps you to stay safe!

  7. 2) What can you do to stay safe? • Follow directions • Read directions before beginning experiments • Listen to your teacher’s instructions • Stay at your station • Raise your hand if you have a question • Ask a teacher to help you get equipment • Keep your area clean • Bring only necessary materials into the lab • Do not bring food or drink into the lab • Alert your teacher immediately of spills or accidents • Replace and clean all equipment when finished

  8. 2) What can you do to stay safe? Dress appropriately Use equipment properly • Tie back long hair • Wear closed-toed shoes • Wear goggles, gloves, and an apron or lab coat when necessary. • Use heat protection gloves when necessary. • Read equipment at eye level. • Keep equipment on a flat, stable surface. • Never point an open container at your face or anyone else’s when heating or mixing. • Never directly smell or taste chemicals

  9. 3) What are some important safety symbols? • Corrosive: breaks down substances/skin • Toxic: poisonous • Flammable: can catch fire and burn. • Biohazard: contains dangerous biological material/germs. • Radioactive: produces harmful radiation, can cause illness/cancer.

  10. 4) What should you do in an accident? • Tell your teacher immediately • Do not touch any spilled or broken materials • Follow your teacher’s instructions quickly and carefully
