  1. Struggling to write a book report? Here are a few tips

  2. Choosing a Question • After you have read your novel choose ONE of the choice questions on the assignment sheet that appeals to you or that you find interesting. • You can find the assignment and questions of the website: www.wrcp.net.

  3. Note The BOOK REPORT is about ANSWERING the question in detail. This means you must discuss the question by thinking reflectivelyabout what is being asked.

  4. When writing this BOOK REPORT, think about it as writing an essay

  5. How long must the book report be? • It is difficult to provide you with a specific word count or tell you how long the essay should be. It should usually be about one and a half pages. • Here is a guide line: • The book reports must have an introduction of one complete • paragraph. (about five lines) • The body of the book report must have at least two to three complete • paragraphs. (about 10 sentences for each paragraph.) • The conclusion must be one complete paragraph. (about five lines)

  6. The Introduction • Make sure the essay has a clear introduction. • It should tell the reader what book you have chosen and what • question you will be answering. • The introduction should also tell the reader how you are planning to • answer the question. In some cases the questions ask for your • opinion. In this case you should let the reader know a little bit about • what your opinion is. Don’t tell the reader everything because then it • gets boring. • Your introduction should be about five sentences.

  7. The Body • The body of the essay should DISCUSS the question in depth. • You should use at least two to three quotations from the book to explain and support your • point of view. • You may add your own opinion, insights, connections and conclusions to the question you • are answering. • Make sure to CONNECT the novel to the world. In other words, why do you think the author • wrote this book? Is there a message in the novel that we need to understand? • Consider the author: How did the author write the story? What kinds of words and • sentences were used that made the novel unique and interesting? • The body should have at least two or three paragraphs.

  8. The Conclusion • The conclusion of the book report must complete your thoughts • and opinions of the question. • DO NOT bring in new ideas in the conclusion. • Rephrase the question that you answered. In this way you are • reminding the reader what your question was about and how you • tried to answer it successfully. • You may add your own opinion whether you enjoyed the book and • WHY. • Your conclusion should be about five sentences.

  9. Where to find the information Go to www.wrcp.net and click on the Reading Resources Tab. Download the questions Download the grading Rubric. This rubric will tell you how the book report will be graded.
