  5. Questions to Tie-In Concepts from IBS • How did the use of immigrant labor contribute to the globalization of the mine? • How did the mining of coal contribute to the industrialization of the Walloon region? • Does the current tourist site have a globalization strategy? If so, describe this strategy. • Are there any other IBS concepts that tie-in with mining, industrialization, or the current tourist site that Blegny mine has become?

  6. Barriers to Intercultural Communication • Values- our values about safe and pleasant working conditions or work in general may affect the way that we interpret the information learned about the working conditions of the miners • Values “are deeply felt beliefs that are shared by a cultural group and that reflect a perception of what ought to be, not what is” (Martin & Nakayama) • Economic imperative- we need to understand the relationship between industrialization and the economy in order to better understand the importance of the mine • Demographic imperative- we need to understand how the immigration patterns at the time affected the demographics of mining workers • Class structure- “most Americans are reluctant to admit that a class structure exists, let alone admit how difficult it is to move up in this structure” (Martin & Nakayama); we need to realize that class structures exist and how this impacted miners during the industrial revolution

  7. Questions to Tie-In Concepts from COM • Although the tour can be offered in English, how could intercultural communication (IC) be affected if the tour guide is not a native English speaker? • Since we did not live during industrialized times, how could IC and our understanding of the harsh living conditions of miners, be affected? • How do you think the importing of Forign Workers Affect the Culture in Liege?
