Main Components • Choose a topic • Write a resume • Obtain a mentor • Write a proposal with mentor guidance • Verify Your Learning Stretch • Complete 12 hours of mentorship with mentor • Complete a task/product/ service (document the process) • Write a letter to the judges • Compose a research paper • Compile a portfolio • Evaluate and document your completed task/product • Practice your speech • Present to the judges • Celebrate!

  3. Priority List • Return Consequences Form • Choose a topic • Find a Mentor – Ms. Todoric’s presentation tomorrow! • Don’t miss a deadline! – Mrs. Izquierdo will hunt you down! 

  4. Choose a topic • Mentor availability – Be mindful that at some point you will have to consider a change in topic in order to secure a mentor. The mentor hours are a non-negotiable! • Interest • Gratifying • Consider an element of community service/higher purpose • Must be intellectually challenging and of Learning Stretch to you!

  5. When choosing a topic • Consider Collaborating • Increases the amount of resources • Increases the amount of fun • Makes for a better product • If you decide to Collaborate: • Be cautious (each person’s portion of the whole must be completed!)

  6. Keep in Mind: Technology • Product/Task (The TOOLS of the TRADE are technology: just remember they must be meaningful and USED by you during your SP journey) • Documentation of the Process • Presentation- (Your PPT is NOT the technology but you can add technology components to show PROOF of learning stretch, product, time with mentor etc.) *demonstration of the use of the technology is HOW you prove it was used!  • Advertisement/ Marketing • Community Outreach

Topic Ideas • Possible topics/products • Fashion • Students work with Goodwill representative (mentor) • Students create a fashion show with clothing from Goodwill and collect donations • Sports • Students work with Special Olympics representative (mentor) • Students create a mini documentary about training athletes with disabilities and present to student body

  8. Other topic ideas • Possible topics/products • Business • Students work with an individual from corporate background • Students create a business plan and actually perform some parts of the plan (calculating the cost of a product and ways to market it and sell it) • Donate money possibly or raise awareness

  9. Find a Mentor ASAP! • Places to find a mentor : Who do you Know? • Parents’ co-workers/acquaintances • Community organizations • Social Media • Places of worship • Former teachers (elementary/middle school) • Google Ms. Todoric will go into more depth tomorrow!

  10. Consequences Form • Sign and print your name • Have parents sign • Return to your English teacher by due date!  The late items KILL your grade folks!

  13. The SP Timeline • Keep it close and refer to it daily during this semester. Write due dates down in a calendar. Discuss big deadlines with your mentor (They will also have a copy of calendar in their booklet!) • This semester : Virtual info meetings- Make note of who the presenter is (Chair of committee): Please go ask questions to them directly if you need to do so. • *Go ahead and take off of work NOW! April 18th! • Absences: If you miss a day that we have a scheduled meeting, it is up to YOU to watch the information on the Wheeler Library page! • Hurricanes/snow days: If something is due in person (Example of Tomorrow), then said item will be due the DAY we return from the chaos!  • Notice items due right before and right after Fall Break; if you do not want to work during your break…. Plan accordingly!

  14. Need to miss school for SP? • Most common—choosing a teacher as a mentor: YOU MAY MISS TWO HALF DAYS OR ONE FULL DAY ONLY with advanced permission without penalty. • There is a STRICT protocol for this! FIVE BUISNESS DAYS PRIOR secure all necessary signatures. • *I have Forms; I will NOT sign it if you do not tell me the DATE you plan to miss!
