  1. 3 Types of Down Syndrome Down syndrome, which is a condition caused by a child being born with an extra copy of chromosome 21, occurs in every 1 in 800 live births. Trisomy 21 Amounting for nearly 95% of all Down syndrome cases, Trisomy 21, is the most common, and it occurs when a baby is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21 in every cell. Translocation Translocation makes up nearly about 4% of Down syndrome cases. This happens when a baby is born with an extra piece of chromosome 21 attached to another chromosome. Mosaicism Responsible for about 1 % of Down syndrome cases, mosaicism occurs when a baby is born with an extra chromosome in some but not all of his or her cells.
