Types of

Down Syndrome

Down syndrome, which is a condition

caused by a child being born with an

extra copy of chromosome 21, occurs

in every 1 in 800 live births.

Trisomy 21

Amounting for nearly 95% of all Down syndrome cases,

Trisomy 21, is the most common, and it occurs when a baby

is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21 in every cell.

Translocation

Translocation makes up nearly about 4% of Down syndrome

cases. This happens when a baby is born with an extra piece

of chromosome 21 attached to another chromosome.

Mosaicism

Responsible for about 1 % of Down syndrome cases,

mosaicism occurs when a baby is born with an extra

chromosome in some but not all of his or her cells.
