  3. INTRODUCTION A Mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure that removes diseased mastoid air cells. It is also performed to remove air bubbles in the skull or near the skull. This can be done as part of treatment for mastoiditis, chronic suppurative otitis media or cholesteatoma. The main purpose of a mastoidectomy surgery is to remove an infection or cholesteatoma which spreads to the mastoid bone.

  4. MASTOIDITIS It is an infection that affects the mastoid bone, located behind the ear. Mastoiditis is usually caused by a middle ear infection. This infection can result in damage to the mastoid bone and the formation of pus-filled cysts.

SURGICAL PROCEDURE The doctor starts the surgery by giving general anesthesia, then the surgeon will usually, • Access mastoid bone through a cut made behind the ear. • Use a microscope and a small drill to open the mastoid bone. • Use suction irrigation to keep the surgical area free of bone dust. • Drill out the infected air cells. • Stitch up the operative site. • Cover the site with gauze to keep the wound clean and dry.

  8. RECOVERY After the surgery the doctor may, • prescribe pain medication. • Give antibiotics to treat any infection. • He might ask the patient to schedule a return for wound check and removal of any bandages and stitches.
