INTRODUCTION • It is a surgery to remove the appendix when it is infected. • The appendix is a small, tube-shaped pouch attached to your large intestine. • Infected appendix is called appendicitis. Appendectomy is a common surgery to treat appendicitis. •  It is is normally performed as an urgent or emergency procedure to treat complicated acute appendicitis.

APPENDICITIS • A condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed and filled with pus, causing pain. • Appendicitis begins with fever and pain near the belly button and then moves toward the lower-right side of the abdomen.  • Appendicitis is usually treated with antibiotics and surgery is required within 24 hours of its diagnosis.

PREPARATION • The patient needs to avoid eating and drinking for at least eight hours before the appendectomy. • The doctor will ask the patient about his medical history and perform a physical examination. • The patient would be hooked up to an IV so he can receive fluids and medication.  • He will be given  local anaesthesia to not feel any pain.

  6. PROCEDURE There are two methods for Appendectomy surgery. • The standard method is an open appendectomy. • Second one is a less invasive method is a laparoscopic appendectomy.

  8. RECOVERY • After the surgery the patient will be monitored for several hours before he is released from the hospital. • Breathing and heart rate of patient will be monitored closely. Hospital staff will also check for any adverse reactions to the anaesthesia or the procedure. • In the days following the appendectomy, the patient may feel moderate pain in the areas where incisions were made.  • Any pain or discomfort should improve within a few days. The doctor may prescribe medication to relieve the pain.
