  3. Agenda Students will fill out their agenda every morning. They will only write down homework or tests. Students will always need to read 20 minutes each night. Please write down how long your child read each night and initial at the bottom of the agenda. Students earn a punch for getting their agenda signed and for reading each night. I check the agendas daily. You may also use the agenda as a form of communication with me.

Social Studies Integrated Study of OKLAHOMA The Pre-K- Twelfth grade social studies curriculum is to develop responsible, action-oriented citizens with a personal, global, and historical understanding of cultural diversity and community. Unit 1: Looking at Oklahoma through Location and Place Unit 2: Looking at Human Interaction with the Environment in Oklahoma Unit 3: Oklahoma study with the rich and diverse history of people and events.

From the online media homepage, students can….. • Browse books and create lists for future reading • Search books by reading level (lexile code) • Access useful websites in the “links” section • Explore links leading to collections of online reading such as TumbleBooks, Capstone and Follett eBooks, and many online databases such as PebbleGo, Kids InfoBits, etc. We have special access to these resources and they would be a great addition to your child’s home literacy and inquiry activities.

Additional media info: • Watch for an email this week with more detailed media resource information • Students check out 2 books at a time—1 ‘just right’ book on their reading level and 1 free choice book • Books are due back every 2 weeks • Students must return overdue books or replace them before checking out additional books • Lost or damaged books can be replaced with a new, hard cover book of the same or similar title

  16. International Baccalaureate -IB Jenks West Elementary is a candidate school for the Primary Years Program. Our school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. This is a multi-year journey with some exciting opportunities for our students and community

So what does it mean for your child in my classroom this year? • Organizing our work into 6 broad themes. • Engaging in developing understanding of central ideas. • You will continue to see inquiry experiences just as you have the past few years. • You can still expect to see intense work with reading and writing workshop, EDM, STC science units, and social studies. • Our classroom and site newsletters will reflect our continued work with IB.

  19. Behavior Log The students and I worked together to create our essential agreements (expectations) for the classroom. We are ALWAYS focused on being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe.

  20. Punch Cards I use punch cards to motivate students to make good choices and to be responsible. When they fill their card they exchange it for a reward.

  21. Thursday Folders Thursday folders will come home every week with graded papers and important notes. Please take all papers out and return the folder to school on Friday.

  22. Star of the Week Each child will have a turn to be “Student of the Week”. I will send home a form for your child to fill out and share with the class. They will bring back the form along with up to three pictures.

October 3, 2013 (rain date: Oct. 10) during school hours, specific class schedule tbd This event will be our school’s largest fundraiser of the year, replacing the sales-based fundraising we have done in the past. Our Jog-a-Thon will be a fun & exciting way for you to get involved at JWE, encourage health and fitness at our campus, and support the financial needs of our classrooms. • How can you help? • Sponsor the Event • There are $250, Bronze Level Sponsorships available until August 31st. This is a great publicity opportunity for your business! • Your Student’s T-shirt Size • Each student will receive a free t-shirt on the day of the event. Confirm that your teacher has your student’s unisex size. • Support Your Student’s Fundraising • In order to reach our financial goals, we need to raise $40,000, an average of $20 per student. When you receive the pledge packet, please guide your student in soliciting and collecting donations. • Volunteer • We need at least three volunteers for this class. The commitment will be less than an hour. Let your homeroom parent know if you can be available.

  26. Parent Teacher Action Group (PTAG) PTAG is a volunteer organization of parents, teachers, and administrators who work together to promote quality education for our children. • JWE PTAG fundraisers include Box Top Collections, Scholastic Book Fairs, Off Campus (Dining Out) Nights, Family Bingo Night, Square 1 Art, and (new this year!) the JWE Jog-A-Thon. These activities and others raise more than $53,000 each year to support the financial needs of our school: • PTAG provides a Daily Agenda to all K-4th grade students. • PTAG supplies all classrooms with periodical subscriptions. • PTAG pays for all K-4th grade students to attend a field trip. • PTAG provides all teachers with books and supplies. • PTAG pays for 3rd and 4th grade state testing prep materials. • PTAG also financially supports Project Westly, author visits, and staff appreciation activities. • JWE PTAG also provides volunteer support for many annual activities: Picture Days, Vision & Hearing Screening, Book Fairs, OCCT Testing, and School Celebrations. PTAG annual membership is $10 per family and available tonight near this building’s lobby.
