  1. Timber and Paper

  2. EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) As of March 2013 no illegal timber allowed to enter or be sold on the EU market Part of EU Forest Law Enforcement, Government and Trade (FLEGT) action plans to combat illegal logging A prohibition on the ‘first placing’ of illegally harvested timber and timber products onto the EU market Out of scope: Packaging Printed materials (books, magazines, leaflets etc)

  3. EUTR Implementation: Those trading in timber products in the EU must keep records of sale and purchase i.e. full chain of custody documentation Penalties for breach of the legislation will include fines and product seizures A Competent Authority, now identified as the National Measurement Office, will carry out on-site checks to ensure compliance

  4. EUTR Requirements: Operators placing timber-derived products on the market must implement a due diligence system which: Provides information about the supply of timber products Evaluates the risk of placing those products on the market Takes steps to mitigate any risk identified

  5. Sure system – managed by our partners The Forest Trust (TFT) • A web based system which houses the information to provide traceability and transparency. • To map our supply chains from legal forest source to final product. • Being used for products both in and out of scope to measure our journey to our 2020 vision. • Used to identify routes which need further risk mitigation to establish legal source.

  6. Loading on correct documentation Help us by loading onto the system the appropriate documentation to prove source

  7. Timber policy - what we require from you • Provide details of forest source (for timber) or mill (for paper) including:- Contact details and addresses- Paper grades and pulps used- Certification schemes (FSC, PEFC) - Species information • Hierarchy of certification schemes:- FSC or post-consumer recycled- PEFC, TFT or pre-consumer recycled • Category conversions to 100% FSC and recycled to be maintained

  8. Timber policy – the process • Input source information onto a web-based system - SURE • Provide further information or supporting documentation (e.g. invoices, certificates) - this will be independently verified • Work with Sainsbury’s to identify alternative source if necessary • Any change to raw material source must be agreed in advance of the change

  9. Things to take away Know where your raw materials are coming from. Ensure supply chain information is visible for Sainsbury’s. Input the relevant data into Sainsbury’s sustainability scorecard.
