He is a writer and a worked as a printer’s apprentice and a typesetter.
In 1861 he rode with his brother Orion in Ben Holladay’s OverlandMail stagecoach west to Nevada.
He became a reporter and writer for the Virginia City's Territorial Enterprise in 1862 until 1864.
In 1865, he received public attention nationwide with the publication of "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."
