  6. Broadcast television networks • There is one “not for profit” television station/network in the United States. • It is the only broadcast network that does not run commercials. • Can you name it?

  15. AFFILIATES • The network affiliate is responsible for providing some of its own programming. • CHANNEL 6 in Philadelphia • Morning programming 10am-12:30pm • Afternoon News 4:00-6:30pm • Nightly News 11:00pm • Overnight Programming/Infomercials

  16. Netlets and affiliates • The networks only provide two hours of daily programming. This is usually 8:00-10:00pm with the exception of sports programming. The affiliates are responsible for filling the remaining twenty two hours. This is done through: • Local news • Syndicated Programming

  17. SYNDICATED PROGRAMS • Syndication- the sale of the rights to broadcast a program to multiple stations without using a broadcast network. • FIRST RUN SYNDICATION- A program runs in syndication and airs an episode for the first time without being on a broadcast network.

  18. SYNDICATION (cont.) • OFF-NETWORK SYNDICATION- the sale of a program that was originally shown on a network. Can be considered a “re-run”.

  20. David sarnoff • Widely considered “The Father of Television” • Head of RCA; fought Farnsworth for the patent of television • Instrumental in television’s development

Television’s ratings system • Monitored and calculated by Nielsen Media • RATINGS- Percentage of people watching a show who own or have a television. • For example, Two and a Half Men has a rating of 12.2. That means that 12.2% of the total population was watching that show. SHARES- Percentage of people watching a show who have a television on at that time. A smaller sample of people. For example, Two and a Half Men has a share % of 15, which means 15% of all people w/ a tv on were watching it.
