Fiber Optic Environmental and Structural Monitoring for Active Pixel Detectors

This presentation discusses the setup and preliminary results of a fiber optic monitoring system for active pixel detectors. The system measures temperature, humidity, and displacement in order to provide accurate environmental and structural data. The system is being tested in a thermo-mechanical mock-up and has potential applications in the Beast II test beam.

  7. Mock-up: Reference FOS position Ref2_1548 temperaturereference Humidity Reference Fiber 43, 44 moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  8. Mock-up: First results: Temperature monitoring S4 S1 S2 S3 F52 • Temperature monitoring F51 sensors during thermal test. F51 moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  9. First results: Humidity Reference Fiber • Humidity reference sensor measures accurately Humidity change when the dry volume is open after temperature effect compensation Underthermalstabilityconditions moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  10. Mock-up: F39 Stress problems Fiber cable manipulation ( outside the dry volume) • Fiber 39 ( sensitive to temperature and humidity) stressed, problems disentangling humidity effect. Fiberreleased Fiberreleasedagain moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  11. Mock-up: F51-F52 Stress problems • F52 and F51 seems to be a little bit stressed ( not comparable with F39, only about 30 pm effect) moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  12. FOS forBeas II moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  13. Beast II- 2016 Test Beam • Beast II have been delayed ( commissioning of BEAST II February 2017??) • Next year Beast II silicon sensors will be proved in a Test Beam at Desy (april 2016??) • Proposal for integration of FBG fibers in FANGS (FE-I4 ATLAS Near Gamma Sensors) in order to measure temperature and humidity during test beam. 2 fiberswithseveralsensorsalongthealuminiumframe moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  14. Beast-II monitoring with fibers • Temperature + humidity measurements on FANGS Stave support ( similar to the proposed for TB). • Temperature measurement along Beam Pipe on different points • Beam pipe – cartridge relative radial vibration measurement using L-shapes. moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  15. Beast-II monitoring with fibers moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  16. Beast-II Hardware • Temperature and Humidity measurements: • Fibers geometry must be defined and fibers the must be ordered and delivered (4 months) • Once fibers received they must be prepared and calibrated with temperature and humidity (2 months) • Fibers fixation must be studied carefully (2 months) • Displacements / Vibrations measurements • L-shapes are manufactured • The clamp must be design, and the contact ball must be glued (1 month) • L-shapes must be tested with humidity ( 3-4 days test) (2 weeks) • L-shapes calibration (2 weeks) moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  17. Beast-II Software • In collaboration with Michael Ritcher: Readout integrated in epics similar to 2014 test beam ( it is expected to be integrated smoothly) • Temperature and humidity and displacement measurements not a problem • Study the possibility of measuring vibrations with L-shapes: • Interrogation speed 1 KHz. Write 1 frequency spectrum each 60 seconds with 0.1hz resolution (0-500 Hz ,5000 points) moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  18. FOS schedule for Beast-II moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.

  19. Conclusions • First Depfet mock-up results: FBG fibers seems to be feasible to measure temperature and humidity • Temperature fibers must be prepared more carefully or use acrylate fibers in order to avoid humidity sensitivity • Fibers locking must be studied very carefully in order to avoid stress effect. • For next year some fibers positioned in the FANGS aluminum support structure ( a hole can be made all along the stave for fibers positioning) in order to measure temperature and humidity during Test beam. • A first proposal for beast II temperature, humidity and displacement monitoring have been presented. More iterations needed with Depfet collaboration in order to define the final system. moyad@ifca.unican.es, 9th VXD workshop, Sep 8th,2015, Trieste.
