  1. The Need For Atonement What Burnt Offerings Have For Us Today

  2. Hebrews 10:1-6 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6  in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure

  3. Hebrews 12:14 Holiness • Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord

  4. Leviticus 27:34 Leviticus 1:1-2 These are the commandments that the LORD commanded Moses for the people of Israel on Mount Sinai. • 1 The LORD called Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When any one of you brings an offering to the LORD, you shall bring your offering of livestock from the herd or from the flock

  5. 1 Corinthians 10:11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.

  6. Hosea 6:6 For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings Anytime we look at God’s commands we should be looking behind them to discover God.

  7. Leviticus 1:3-4 So one could be accepted “If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer a male without blemish. He shall bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the Lord.4 He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

  8. Leviticus 1:5-9 Be impressed with the details 5 Then he shall kill the bull before the Lord, and Aaron's sons the priests shall bring the blood and throw the blood against the sides of the altar that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 6 Then he shall flay the burnt offering and cut it into pieces, 7 and the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire. 8 And Aaron's sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, the head, and the fat, on the wood that is on the fire on the altar; 9 but its entrails and its legs he shall wash with water. And the priest shall burn all of it on the altar, as a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

  9. Ezekiel 37:24 Ezekiel 36:27 My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes [27] And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. (ESV)

  10. Ecclesiates 5:1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil.

  11. EVERY person could come before the Lord • v. 3, an animal from the herd? Bring it! • v. 10, an animal from the flock? Bring it! • v. 14, just a pigeon? Bring it • v. 17b - …It is a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

  12. Leviticus 1:4 Hebrews 10:4 Offering was for atonement For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him Problem Atonement has to be an act of the Lord’s grace

  13. Leviticus 1:10 Leviticus 1:3 Animal was to be without blemish If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer a male without blemish. He shall bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the Lord. “If his gift for a burnt offering is from the flock, from the sheep or goats, he shall bring a male without blemish

  14. Malachi 1:6-10 A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am ia master, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ 7 By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that the Lord's table may be despised. 8 When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the Lord of hosts. 9 And now entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With such a gift from your hand, will he show favor to any of you? says the Lord of hosts. 10 Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hand.

  15. Malachi 2:3 Behold, I will rebuke your offspring, and spread dung on your faces, the dung of your offerings, and you shall be taken away with it

  16. 1 Corinthians 10:11 Leviticus 1:4 Worshipper laid his hand on the sacrifice Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him

  17. Mark 12:28-33 28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

  18. The first step toward holiness was the burnt offering. Our first step is also the offering, the connection between Jesus and us.
