  17. Introduction New Zealand consists of a group of islands that lie in the South Pacific, almost 2,000 km from Australia. It has two official languages, English and Maori. The Maori, who settled on the islands in about 1,000 AD, make up about 9% of the total population. Many of their ancient traditions are still kept alive, although New Zealand has a mainly European feel to it. In this lesson Ss listen to some tour guide information about New Zealand and consider the future of the tourist industry. Through this context Ss analyse the use of will for predictions. 31. Reading For years, many peoplethought that NewZealand was famousfor sheep, rugby and… more sheep. Butsuddenly these islandshave a new image. Theyare now one of the most fashionable touristdestinations in the world. And all because of a film,or actually three films. The Lord of the Rings wasfilmedin New Zealandand it’s a wonderfuladvert for the country. People now want to visit New Zealand to see the places in the film. Reading_4_Text1

  32. Tourism in New Zealand is doing verywell – that’s the LOTR effect. Some tourists come just to see the film locations. For example, there’s a beautiful place called Matamata just south of Auckland.250 tourists come here every day. They pay thirty dollars each to seethe remains of Hobbiton village from the first The Lord of the Ringsfilm. Tours of the various film locations are very popular. In the two weeks after the first film came out, holidaybookings went up more than twenty percent. Reading_4_Text2

  33. Expertsthink that the number of tourists will double in thenear future and it won’tstop there. Some peoplethink that New Zealand will soon have over threemillion tourists a year. But there are some questionsabout all this success. Will tourism change the natural beauty of the landscape? Will it affect the wildlife? And will tourists still want to visit New Zealand ifthese things happen? Reading_4_Text3

Reading_4_Note6
