  2. What is Four Square Writing? Four-square writing is a method of teaching basic writing skills that is applicable across grade levels and curriculum areas. It can be applied when writing narrative, descriptive, expository or persuasive forms of writing.

  3. How to Create a Four-Square Graphic Organizer • Fold a sheet of white, unlined paper into four equal squares. • Write a topic sentence in the middle of the paper. • In three of the squares write a complete sentence which states reasons, examples, or explanations that support the sentence in the center of the paper.

  4. In the fourth box write a feeling sentence to support the topic. • Then go back to each square and write in several detail sentences about the first sentence you wrote in the box. • Finally use your Four Square pre-writing to write your story. then

  5. Sample: 2. Exposition – Sally is a twelve-year old girl living in New York City. 3. Rising Action – Sally meets and falls in love with Jake, who likes Martha; so she tries to win Jake over by doing crazy things.. 1. Problem sentence – Sally thinks she is ugly. 4. Climax and Falling Action– Jake asks Sally to the prom, Jake dances with other girls, and many boys want to dance with Sally and ask her why she cares about such a loser. 5. Resolution – Sally realizes that she is not ugly and decides that Jake is not worth her time.

  6. Read your prompt or look carefully at the picture your teacher gave you and begin the process. Go back to the instructions if you need to do so.
