  2. CTELL • U. S. Department of Education 5 year grant • 3 major goals based on three invitational priorities from RFP

  3. 3 Invitational Priorities • Providing professional development to higher education faculty that will enable them to help all prospective teachers learn to work with ELLs;

  4. 3 Invitational Priorities • Collecting post training assessment on the effectiveness of program graduates in order to determine the impact of the project on the academic achievement of ELLs in Kindergarten through 12th grade; and

  5. 3 Invitational Priorities • Providing high quality professional development for secondary content teachers that will help these teachers improve the academic achievement and language proficiency of ELLs.

  6. 3 Goals • Goal 1: Improve the UHCL teacher education program to better prepare teachers to provide effective instruction to ELLs.

  7. 3 Goals • Goal 2: Provide high-quality professional development for secondary content teachers to help these teachers improve academic achievement, literacy and language development of ELLs.

  8. 3 Goals • Goal 3: Utilize a dynamic assessment model with continuous evaluation and feedback to improve project implementation, determine project effectiveness and determine the impact of the project on the academic achievement and English language development of kindergarten through 12th grade ELLs.

  9. Goal 1 • Objective 1a: A total of 60 UHCL faculty members will be recruited & selected to participate in CTELL by the end of the five-year funding cycle. • 30 in Group 1 (PY 2-3) and 30 in Group 2 (PY 4-5)

  10. Goal 1 • Objective 1b: 60 UHCL faculty participants will attend professional development sessions on meeting the needs of ELLs. • Overview of sheltered instruction, two prof. dev’t. sessions/semester (PY 2-5); 1 field experience to collaborating districts each semester (PY 2-5); 1 meeting with UHCL faculty & inservice teachers in spring semesters (PY 2-5).

  11. What Does This Mean for You? • CTELL faculty professional development - Group 1 • Will begin Fall 2008 and continue through Spring 2010

  12. What Does This Mean for You? • 2 professional development sessions with related activities and one field experience each semester • A stipend of $350 for each semester of participation in CTELL Professional Development activities • $100 in materials

  13. What Does This Mean for You? • Professional Development sessions will address: • Second Language Acquisition and what it means for UHCL students • Educational Programs for English Language Learners • Sheltered Instruction Techniques

  14. What Does This Mean for You? • Your responsibilities: • Participate in sessions at UHCL • Participate in field experiences in local public schools • Analyze course syllabi and instruction • Modify instruction to meet the needs of UHCL English language learners • Disseminate information about sheltered instruction in appropriate courses
