  4. “Waving” • With a nod to Stevie Smith's poem: "i wasn't waving, but drowning," a woman recalls the intense, complex relationship she shared with her grandmother.

  5. “Waving” • How are the grandmother and granddaughter related to each other? What does “swimming” mean in this film?

  6. “Waving”: grandmother • Grandmother  grandfather: does not sleep with him for thirty years; “What do you want out of my young life?” • Childhood: 1) learning to swim; 2) Lonely little girl 現衡量距我迷失之測量單位離那寂寞小女孩有多久遠; 醫生建議我離開祖母代代相傳的神經緊張 • Adulthood -- She does not like any of my friends; she likes everything I do; • She does not do anything but . . . • She froze; drowning.

  7. “Waving” • “swimming”— • Father: 把她丟進水裡; 這是學會的唯一方法 • Afloat in the water of eternity with memories:潛入似永恆之水裡, 唯有乘著漲滿的翅膀浮上水面 • Amniotic water: bonding between the two.

  8. Pioneers of X-Ray Technology: according to AMF • Originally interested in combining a documentation of Dr. To's achievements with the larger theme of the voyeuristic aspects of the medium, I find myself now making a film about the relationship between Grandpa and me. • . . . all he is giving me is fragments. • It's like you need X-ray vision to see what's really going on inside.

  9. Pioneers of X-Ray Technology: according to AMF • How is this grandfather presented? Accomplished? Scatter-brained? • Why is the interview scene intersected with the scenes of Ann Marie as a baby? • What are the functions of the inserted words? • What are the central motifs in this film?

  10. Achievements • Fragments: -- not answering the question about nude women; -- At 17, got his car; interested in cars and cylinders;  AMF’s car bought by him -- the war; the immigrants; -- the father; -- attracted to big buildings

  11. Family: “Pioneers” • The narrator: Looking for grandmother + adding her own images, with her mother’s voice?

  12. Achievements and Family • But all I could see was granny, mum, and me blowing kisses

  13. Achievements and Family • Respect and Acknowledgment of his aging.

  14. AMF’s Tiresias • Where do we see that it’s a personal revision of Tiresias? • What do you think about Fleming’s self-image (as a stickgirl)? How are men and women presented? • How are the different social roles presented through Tiresias’ sex change?

  15. Culture Jam • Batman-inspired Jack Napier of the Billboard Liberation Front, • Disney arch-enemy Reverend Billy from the Church of Stop Shopping and Media • Tigress Carly Stasko.

  16. BLF • "As always, the alterations were done using paper and rubber cement which can be peeled off the billboard without damaging the original advertisement."

  17. examples • HITS HAPPEN -- NEW X-100 •  SHIT HAPPENS -- NEW EXXON
