Dr. Jekyll • The character of Dr. Jekyll, both physically and emotionally, deteriorates as the novel progresses. • It is important to chart this deterioration and understand the reasons behind it. • Find the quotation which describes Jekyll (physically ) for the first time in the novel. (Dr Jekyll Was Quite at Ease) • How would you describe his mental/emotional state during this conversation with Utterson?

Jekyll continued… • The next time Utterson sees Dr. Jekyll, he appears very different (Incident of the Letter): • Find a quote which highlights the difference in Jekyll’s physical appearance from the last time Utterson saw him. • Explain, briefly, the reason for the change in his appearance. • Find a quotation which shows Jekyll still feels capable of controlling Hyde at this point in the novel. • How would YOU describe Jekyll’s mental state at this point? Give reasons for your answer.
