  1. William and Mary Scholar Undergraduate Research Experience(WMSURE)Introductory Faculty Information for the School of Education 10.15.2011 Dogwood Room 10:00-12:00

  2. Who We Are • Joel Schwartz (Dean of Interdisciplinary Studies and Director of the Charles Center) • Anne H. Charity Hudley (Assistant Professor, English, Linguistics, Africana Studies; William & Mary Professor of Community Studies) • Liz Allison (Chair, Biology) • Cheryl Dickter (Assistant Professor, Psychology, Neuroscience) • Leah Glenn (Assistant Professor, Theatre, Speech & Dance) • Chon Glover (Assistant to the President for Diversity and Community Initiatives)

  3. Who Are the W&M Scholars? • The William and Mary Scholar Award is presented each year to a small, select group of students who have overcome unusual adversity and/or would add to the diversity of the campus community. • All applicants are considered for the award and no separate application is needed. Awards are worth the amount of in-state tuition and fees and are renewable each year as long as the recipient remains in good academic standing at the College. • http://www.wm.edu/admission/financialaid/typesofaid/scholarships/index.php • About 10 years in existence • About 40 students selected a year • Admissions makes the decisions

  4. What are We Doing? • The William and Mary Scholars Undergraduate Research Experience is being created to increase research opportunities for ALL: • minority, • first generation, • lower income students, • students with physical disabilities, • and students who have experienced exceptional hardship or adversity.

  5. Goals of the Program • A hallmark of WMSURE will be the faculty mentor workshops that will serve both the faculty and students. • We are working to seek appropriate workshop facilitators and guest lecturers from on and off campus.

  6. Goals of the Program • Building a cohort of scholars • We cannot overstate the importance. • Encouraging students to take part in all that W&M has to offer

  7. How Did WMSURE Come to Be? • Dean Strikwerda’s model at Kansas • Established in 1992, the KU Dean’s Scholars Program is part of the University Honors Program and is geared for academically talented students in the liberal arts and sciences who are interested in pursuing graduate study and who represent groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate education. • Dean’s Scholars receive annual $1,000 scholarships, are matched with distinguished faculty mentors and are required to complete special seminars designed to build skills necessary for graduate study. Students are selected as sophomores and juniors and must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

  10. Integration With Other Scholars Programs On Campus • Murray, Monroe, & Sharpe/Community Studies • Like Monroe & Sharpe we’re hoping long term for different points of entry • Many events will be “sponsored by WMSURE” instead of just only “for WMSURE” • Still resolving other issues of parity
