  5. Who? What? When? • Who? • Fourth year pharmacy students (P-4’s) complete rotations. • What? • 8 five-week experiential rotations at various pharmacy practice sites with approved pharmacist preceptors are required in the curriculum. • 5 ‘required’ and 3 electives • Exact dates for each experience will be discussed in July, 2012. • When? • You will start in June of 2013 and finish in April of 2014 before graduating in May of 2014.

  6. Where? • Campus-based students must complete at least 4 rotations in the Omaha/Lincoln/Blair area. • Distance pathway students may complete all rotations out-of-town if quality sites are available. • We cannot guarantee that quality sites are available to meet the objectives for all 8 rotations. • Some students choose to come back to Omaha for difficult-to-obtain rotations. • We have a database of sites that includes local faculty and preceptors as well as preceptors across the country. • BUT, the distance sites in our database may or may not be able to take students from year to year, so it is typically a good idea to get out and network. • You are welcome (and encouraged) to try to set up ‘new sites’ that we don’t have in the database. • You will be required to submit them to our office for approval in the fall of 2012 and our office will review them for quality, and contact the site(s) to try to officially schedule for the year.

  7. How? • We will discuss this in more detail next summer during orientation prior to your P3 year. • You will need to identify sites in your region/area, submit them to our office for approval next fall, and our office will review them and officially set up the schedule and plan for the year. • We complete most of the calling starting in early January through the spring and into the rotation year. • Local distance pathway students will rank your top choices for local sites you are interested in and a lottery system (called optimization in E-Value) randomly assigns the students to the sites based on availability and rank.

  8. How? (continued) • We recommend that you start networking in your community/region to find out what sites might be potential quality rotation sites for you: • Mentors* • Area pharmacists • Local organizations • Local, state, regional meetings • University or large hospital systems

  9. What are the required rotations? • Community (retail environment) • Hospital (distribution: inpatient IV’s, dispensing, etc) • Acute Care (internal medicine, adult medicine, ‘clinical’ inpatient) • Ambulatory Care (outpatient clinics) • Drug Information (DI centers, drug companies)

  11. How do I decide what elective rotations to complete? • Base them on your career goals and the type of experience the rotation will provide for you. • Take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about pharmacy practice in various settings - you will never get this opportunity again!

  12. What are some questions I should ask the site? • What pharmacy services do they routinely provide to customers/patients? • Have they taken pharmacy students for a rotation experience before? • If yes, when and how many? Was it a good experience? • What schools/colleges of pharmacy send students to them on a regular basis?

  13. What are some more questions I should ask the site? • What activities would the student be involved with? • When can they take students? What limits/conditions/constraints do they have concerning taking students? • Are they willing to take you as a student? (Do they want to educate pharmacy students?)

  14. Some rules to think about: • The student is responsible for transportation to all sites, including out-of-town sites. • The student is responsible for housing during all rotations, including out-of-town rotations. Alumni may be able to help! • Per ACPE guidelines and standards, student cannot be reimbursed, compensated for or receive a stipend for rotations.

  15. …some other rules to think about: • Concurrent full-time employment during rotations is strongly discouraged and will not be the basis for excusing the student from any of their rotation experiences or altering their rotation schedule and assignments. • Students are not allowed to do rotations where they are currently working (unless in a different area of the same institution). • Students cannot do rotations anywhere a conflict of interest may exist between the student and the site or the preceptor.

  16. Internship Licenses • Students are responsible for obtaining internship licenses or permits in each state they will complete rotations in. • Web site for local boards of pharmacy: www.nabp.net

  17. In summary, what should you be doing now? • If you want to set up new rotation sites, start networking early to seek out these sites. • Network with pharmacists in areas you have friends and relatives living who may be able to assist with housing. • Let me know if you plan to utilize the Omaha area sites so that we can plan ahead for local rotation load. • If you have a job, be sure to let them know you may not be able to work the same hours during your rotation year and make financial plans about how to handle that now. • If you have childcare issues, be sure to make plans for full-time care during your rotation year.

  18. Tentative Timeline…. • July, 2012:Orientation for rotation selection and group meetings • November, 2012:Rotation preference submission • Spring, 2013:Final schedule posted • June, 2013-April, 2014: Rotations • May, 2014:Graduation!!
