  1. Learning Mentor Technology Project – Carol Rose Griffith Purpose: To capture, store and circulate the oral histories of ESOL students at Riverina Institute of TAFE, Griffith campus using available current technologies

  2. Current progress • Have consulted with ESOL and computer teachers working with targeted groups of students. Teachers keen about conducting the project. • Learning Technology Mentor to develop a script of questions to be used in obtaining relevant information from students. This methodology was settled upon in consultation with teachers as some students have limited English skills and oftentimes were not very literate in their own language. Culturally too many are often very shy and unable to talk impromptu.

  3. Audacity (located on computers in room) at this stage seems the best way to capture the raw oral histories. • Once all materials captured they will be uploaded to the my LTM wiki where they will be available for listening and use • Plan is to also expand this by circulating them via MP3 technology through the Library. (Similar to audiobooks) • Projected start date 03/06/2010. Capturing to probably take approximately 3 weeks.

  4. Outcomes • Creation of a dynamic set of oral histories particular to Griffith campus detailing migrant experiences • Development of student IT skills by requiring them to use new technologies to capture their voice etc. • Development of LTM skills through uploading and conversion of raw data to formats suitable for storage and circulation
