  2. What Is Turf Toe? • Turf Toe Is An Injury Where You Tear The Capsule Surrounding The Joint At the Base Of The Toe. • This May Lead To: • Instability/Dislocation Of The Joint At The Base Of The Toe • Accelerated Cartilage Wear Of The Big Toe • Arthritis Of The Big Toe

  3. Mechanism • Running And Jumping Repeatedly On Turf • Jamming The Toe • Bad Footwear

  4. Signs And Symptoms • Stiffness • Swelling • Limited Range Of Motion • Pain • Discoloration

  5. Treatments • R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) • Anti-Inflammatory Medication • Special Footwear Inserts • X-Ray • Surgery • Short Leg Cast • Walker Boot

  6. Prevention • Proper Shoes • Switch To Grass Or Dirt Instead Of Turf

  7. When Will I Be Able To Play? • Three Weeks Of Rest Should Occur To Allow The Joint Capsule To Heal. • Special Inserts May Be Used To Limit The Range Of Motion From Further Damage On The Joint Capsule • Ask Doctor To Evaluate Your Feet For Possible Inserts To Control Motion Of The Inflamed Joint.

  8. Will Turf Toe Come Back? • If A Player Returns To Early To Their Sport After A Turf Toe Injury, The Injury May Come Back. • Bone Spurs May Occur Which Severely Limit The Range Of Motion Of The Toe Joint. If Bone Spurs Occur, Surgery May Be Needed.
