Acte II Scène xiv • ROSINE: ‘Monsieur le Soldat, ne vousemportez point, de grace’ • COUNT: ‘Moipoli, et vousjolie…enfinsuffit’ • BARTHOLO __ Doucement, doucement, Seigneur Soldat, je n'aime point qu'on regarde ma femme de si près. LE COMTE __ Elle est votre femme ? BARTHOLO __ Eh ! quoi donc ? LE COMTE __ Je vous ai pris pour son bisaïeul paternel, maternel, sempiternel ; il y a au moins trois générations entre elle et vous.

Letter Games • Letter 1 – Rosine out of the window [I, iii] - ROSINE, le papier lui échappe et tombe dans la rue • “Letter” 2 – Count to Rosine via Figaro in singing in the street • Letter 3 – Rosine to the Count via Figaro • ROSINE lui donne la lettre qu’elle vient d’écrire • Inky hands! • Letter 4 – Count to Rosine • LE COMTE: Prenez cette lettre  no stage direction for the passing of thisletter • Later in scene this letter gets shown to Rosine again by the Count • Count tells Rosine to take out her handkerchief so it seems that she has dropped at letter – then managed to pick his to her up • Bartholo sees this, and Rosine switches this letter with one her cousin has written to her • “Letter” 5, billetingletter: Count to Bartholo • Le comte cache la lettre et lui donne un autre papier • The lettergiven to the Count by Rosine in Act II hethengives over to Bartholo to winhis confidence and gain access to Rosine.

Bartholo • Beaumarchais suggests that because Bartholo is less of a fool than dupes in comedy usually are, he requires more resource to outwit him and so provokes movement within the plot. • ROSINE, à part.__ Il n'en a pas manqué une seule. [II, xii] BARTHOLO, à Figaro.__ Eh mais ! il semble que vous le fassiez exprès de vous approcher, et de vous mettre devant moi, pour m'empêcher de voir... [III, xii]

  6. Rosine’s Games • Letter switching • Pretending to be asleep when Bartholo reads the dummy letter • Has an argument with Bartholo at “Lindor”’s behest • Takes part in getting rid of Bazile from the room

  7. Acte III Scène xi – Devil • FIGARO: ‘C’est le diable!’ • BAZILE: ‘Qui diableest-cedoncqu’on trompe ici? Tout le monde estdans le secret’ • BAZILE à part: Diableemportesij’ycomprendsrien! et sans cette bourse… • BARTHOLO, seul, les poursuit__ Je suis fou ! Infâmes suborneurs ! émissaires du Diable, dont vous faites ici l'office, et qui puisse vous emporter tous ! [III, xiv]

  8. Acte III Scène xi – Use of legal tropes • BARTHOLO, haut.__ Eh bien, Bazile, votre homme de Loi ? ... FIGARO__ Vous avez toute la soirée pour parler de l'homme de Loi. BARTHOLO, à Bazile.__ Un mot ; dites-moi seulement si vous êtes content de l'homme de Loi ? BAZILE, effaré.__ De l'homme de Loi ? LE COMTE, souriant.__ Vous ne l'avez pas vu, l'homme de Loi ? BAZILE, impatient.__ Eh ! non, je ne l'ai pas vu, l'homme de Loi.

FIGARO __ Il a la physionomie toute renversée. Allez vous coucher. BARTHOLO __ D'honneur, il sent la fièvre d'une lieue. Allez vous coucher. ROSINE __ Pourquoi donc êtes-vous sorti ? On dit que cela se gagne. Allez vous coucher. BAZILE, au dernier étonnement.__ Que j'aille me coucher ! TOUS LES ACTEURS ENSEMBLE __ Eh ! sans doute.

Count Almaviva’s Games • Alma / Viva – Nourishing / Life • Disguise – a way of distancing himself from his true identity • Deliberately misleading Bartholo, and Rosine to a point • Testing Rosine’s love • Adopting different personas to tie in with his characters • Joins in with the letter giving • The convincing of Bazile

  12. Nothing the characters do has any effect. The characters attempt to deceive, but the events around them are far better at the game than they are.
