  2. Deep Ecology • Called for new ecological paradigm that will replace the dominant mechanistic paradigm of the past 300 years. • Based on a Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess’ 1973 Article “The Shallow and the Deep, Long-Range Ecology Movement”

  3. Deep Ecology • Notion that the reform of environmentalism in the 70’s dealt only with the legal and institution fixes for pollution and resource depletion • Notion that fundamental changes in human relations with nonhuman nature need to take place.

Deep Ecology Arne Naess’ Principles of Deep Ecology • Rejection on man-in-environment image in favor of the relation, total field image. • Biospherical egalitarianism • Principles of diversity and of symbiosis • Anti-class posture • Fight against pollution and resource depletion. • Complexity, not complication. • Local autonomy and decentralization.
