  1. Composition of the Blood

  2. Composition of the Blood • Red Blood Cells • White Blood Cells • Platelets • Plasma

  3. Red Blood Cells • Called Erythrocytes • Most numerous • Contain hemoglobin • Carry Oxygen to the cell and Carbon Dioxide away from the cell • No nucleus • About a 120 day life span • Saucer shaped • Produced in the Red bone marrow

  4. Hemoglobin bonds to the Oxygen!

  5. White Blood Cells • Called Leucocytes • Two different kinds of WBC - lymphocyte – makes antibodies - phagocyte – engulf pathogens • Have a nucleus • Second most numerous • Produced in the bone marrow, lymph nodes and spleen • Yellowish white and spiky shaped

  6. Platelets • Called Thrombocytes • Pieces of larger cells • Contain fibrin - a spider web like material that helps clot a wound

  7. Plasma • Liquid part of blood • 55% of the blood • 91% water • 9% dissolved materials - calcium - glucose - minerals - proteins - electrolytes (salts)

  8. Blood!

  9. Diseases of the Blood • Leukemia – disease of the white blood cells – interferes with ability to fight infection • Hemophilia – disease of the platelets. Blood does not clot • Anemia – disease of the red blood cells. Not enough rbc’s to carry oxygen to the cells • Sickle cell Anemia – also a disease of the red blood cells. The shape of the red blood cell prevents it from carrying enough oxygen
