Out of Sight Outline Part 1: Problem Description • Key Concepts • Translation, Localization & Technology Part 2: Experiment and Results • Experiment Description • Quality Results • Timing Results Part 3: Conclusions and Beyond • Conclusions • New Aims JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Part 1 Problem Description JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Part 1: Problem Description WEB SITES, VISUAL CONTEXT AND TRANSLATION TOOLS Web Sites (Hypermedia Texts) • Non-Linear (Cross-References) • Verbal and Non-Verbal Elements • Better Created/Read in Digital Format than on Paper Visual Context • Images, Sounds, Videos, Distribution of Elements on Screen… • Information Needed to Understand Text as a Whole • Integral part of the text Translation Tools • WYSIWYG (Word Processors) • Word-Only (Professional Translation Tools) JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Part 1: Problem Description LOCALIZATION, TRANSLATION & TECHNOLOGY Localization Industry • Translation is a word-replacement activity. • A text is a unit equal to the sum of its phrases/sentences and non-verbal elements. Translation Theory and Practice • Translation is an act of interlingual/intercultural communication. • Texts are units with interrelated elements. Technology • Tools are designed by the Localization industry. • Tools restrict the freedom of translators. JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Out of Sight Part 2 Experiment Results Part 2 Experiment and Results JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Part 2: Experiment and Results THE HYPOTHESIS Translating with a WYSIWYG environment is easier and faster than translating with a word-only environment. JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
4 Informants 2 Texts 2 Tools Out of Sight Part 2: Experiment and Results THE EXPERIMENT JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Part 2: Experiment and Results QUALITY OF THE TRANSLATED TEXTS • Quality between texts was similar regardless of the tool used. • Quality got affected when informants did not see the target text layout. JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Part 2: Experiment and Results TIMING CATEGORIES • Translation • Editing • Research • Source Text • Target Text • Management JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Part 2: Experiment and Results TIMING RESULTS • General translation times did not clearly depend on the environment used. • However, informants spent more time viewing the target text (TT) when they translated using a word-only environment. JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Out of Sight Part 3 Conclusions and Beyond Part 2 Experiment Results JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Part 2: Experiment and Results CONCLUSIONS • Translations done in a word-only environment include new types of errors. • Competence using the tools and creating hypermedia texts is key to produce quality translations. • Translators need to see their work in its native, final format. • Word-only environments may speed up translation parts with no visual elements. • Optimal efficiency may be achieved with flexible tools offering blended translation environments. JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
Out of Sight Part 3: Future Research NEW AIMS • Describe/categorize translation tools. • Describe/categorize hypermedia texts. • Analyze industrial localization procedures, decisions and reasons. • Use a multidisciplinary approach (technical, textual, industrial). JOSÉ RAMÓN BIAU GIL 7 OCTOBER 2005
