Background: UNDA Project • Strengthening statistical capacity of countries with economies in transition to assess progress in achieving the MDG 7 and provide data on environmental vulnerabilities • To support the EECCA countries to meet the demand for high-quality statistics on sustainable development and environmental sustainability and address the issues: • Lack of statistical processes in place to produce statistics and indicators to measure the long-term sustainable development and environmental sustainability • Problems with the quality, availability and international comparability of data to monitor the implementation of environmental policies • Lack of timely data that can be used to identify vulnerabilities and monitor environmental sustainability.
Objective of Desk Study • The review of the waste statistics in the EECCA countries, also from the international and European perspectives • Summary of the discussions held during the workshop • Analysis of the data provided by the countries • Emphasis on the main issues and challenges in the area • Recommendations for future improvements
Key issues and challenges • Data sources • Problems with data collection from enterprises and municipalities, from private or state sources • Irregular reporting • Data availability, time series • Are all sectors of economic activities covered? • Are all municipalities covered? • Methodologies • Measurement units • Estimations

Recommendations • General Recommendations • Cooperation between the international organizations • Alignment of waste classifications and definitions used at the national level with internationally-recognized classifications and terminology • Cooperation among various institutions at the national level • Targets to reduce the amount of waste generated • Training for personnel of enterprises who are responsible for reporting data • Specific Recommendations • Develop conversion rates at national level • Countries referring to EU legislation should follow the latest updates • Common methodology for defining the list of enterprises reporting on waste
