  5. Introductory Lesson * Wisconsin Indians • Read about tribes from Native book • Discuss the 11 different tribes logos • Look at similarities/differences in tribes –highlight important things • Discuss specific things that a tribe was known for • Study map of Wisconsin for tribes location

Learning Outcomes • Students will name (knowledge)11 different tribes throughout Wisconsin • Students will identify(comprehension) what they learned while reading • Students will relate (application) some differences and similarities in tribes • Students will detect, choose & compare (analysis & evaluation) some specific characteristics about the tribe they read about • will highlight information on the handout then read out loud to the rest of the class • will identify tribes logo and their location on the map

Content Standards • GEG A.8 Identify major change in community: why/results • HIS 4.2 Know effects of mining, lumber and agriculture • BEH 4.1/2 Explain learning influences and factors effecting identity/development • BEH 4. 3/4 Describe characteristics of family/influences of culture • BEH 4. 8/9 Describe distinguish/learning about differing values/beliefs • BEH 4.13 Investigate/explain cultural similarities/differences • BEH 4.13/14 Describe cultural differ, understanding misunderstanding • BEH 4.15 Describe interdependence of individuals/groups/nations

  8. Materials • Native Wisconsin Book • 1 copy of each tribe’s information from book for a total of 11 tribes • Map to identify each tribe’s location • Basket • 11 different logo’s for each tribe • Smart board • 22 highlighters

  10. Procedures 1. Give students directions of the activity • Students will work with a partner reading about a tribe • One student will choose a logo from the basket and that will determine which tribe they will read about • They will read and highlight 4 to 5 things that they learned about that tribe • Then one or both students will read out loud to the class until all 11 teams have read 2. Before the students read they will show their logo and tell which tribe it belongs to. 3. When a team reads about their tribe the other students will listen and remember some things they heard to discuss what they remember about that tribe. 4. Students will answer questions about each tribe after each team reads out loud 5. 11 different tribes will be pointed out on map 6. Students will raise their hands when their tribe is shown on the map on the smart board

  11. Key Questions • What did you learn from reading about your tribe? • What were some differences/similarities in the tribes? • What were some things that made the tribe well known? • Where do they live today? • Can you see the differences in each tribe’s logo?

  14. Student to Student • Working in groups of 2 • Reading together • Highlighting important things learned • Report back to peers • Locate tribe on the map

  15. Cooperative Learning • Students agree which parts to read individually • Students must agree what to highlight • Students work as a team to report back • Students listen to others read and learn important characteristics

Assessment • Students will identify a tribe by reading the name on their logo • Students will read together with their partner to identify some things they learned about the tribe • Students will highlight things they feel is important about the tribe • Students will discuss things similar or different that they learned about each tribe from listening to their peers reading • Students will locate the specific tribe they read about on the map of Wisconsin
