  2. NSDCI – the early year(s) • Created over 2 years ago • Concern identified that funders were approving projects without any knowledge there were standards • Initial meeting called • Gathering of archives, universities, libraries, museums, community based groups, funders, etc.

  3. NSDCI – the early year(s) • Key issues identified by participants • Duplication of projects and content • Lack of centralized information source • No forum for communication • Funders were not aware of standards

  4. NSDCI – the early year(s) • Key actions approved at first meeting • Efforts of all groups were complimentary • There were common needs • There were differences but they could be accommodated • The pieces were there, they needed to be brought together

  5. NSDCI – the early year(s) • Steering Committee formed • Members represented the main “players” but everyone was welcome (and needed!) • Key partners • Nova Scotia Provincial Library • Dalhousie School of Library and Information Studies • Canadian Initiative on Digital Libraries (CIDL)

  6. NSDCI – formation • Achievements • Website created with information and resources • A gathering spot, using CIDL • 1st open meeting at the Council of NS Archives Spring Conference • Investigated and abandoned the possibility of a common software solution

  7. NSDCI – building a community • New (and old) directions • 2nd open meeting • Informed members of progress • Surveyed members about their needs • Recruited new members • Presented a forum to raise issues

  8. NSDCI – building a community • Where we are headed • Continued building of a common information resource • Continue communication • Raise awareness to funders of the NSDCI • Promotion to the general public of NS digital content – 69 projects completed • Skills development and education

  9. NSDCI – What we learned • NOT a watchdog, but promote best practices through: • Education and information • Communication • Promotion • Does NOT fund, but brings people together • OPEN to everyone
