  4. History Standards and Student Goals In History we study Ancient Civilizations, particularly Rome, Greece and Ancient Mesopotamia. Benchmark for this Unit: • Social Studies Global History Benchmark SS9.1.8 Classical Greek Civilization – Understands achievements of Greek culture • Mathematics – Archimedes, Pythagoras and Euclid Student Goals: Students will be able to: • Evaluate the use of mathematics in the development of ancient civilizations • Summarize the effects of scientific reasoning on developing civilizations

  5. In History Class: • A focus on Societies needs for development in order to develop and survive: • Food • Water • Protection/ Defense

  6. History Class Continued Students would be given a focus question: “What developments are important to the success of Ancient Civilizations?”

  7. History Assignment • THEMATIC ESSAY QUESTION • Directions: Write a well-organized essay that includes an introduction, several paragraphs addressing the task below, and a conclusion. • Theme: Science and Technology • Task: You may use any scientific or technological advance we discussed in this unit. Some suggestions you might wish to consider include development of agriculture, irrigation systems, the astrolabe, the catapult, lever/pulley or the water screw.

  8. Math Standard and Student Goals In Math we study different concepts and equations that pertain to our everyday lives. Benchmark for this Unit: • G.RP.1 Recognize that mathematical ideas can be supported by a variety of strategies • G.CN.6 Recognize and apply mathematics to situations in the outside world • G.CN.8 Develop an appreciation for the historical development of mathematics Student Goals: Students will be able to: • Evaluate the use of mathematics in the integration of some of Archimedes’ inventions • Explain various methods for finding Pi

  9. In Math Class: • A focus on Archimedes’ Method of Exhaustion for approximating Pi and other methods of calculating Pi • Archimedes’ Inventions

  12. PI Students would be given a focus question: “Summarize the different ways in which Pi can be calculated.”

  13. EUREKA = “I GOT IT” Archimedes after jumping out of the bath tub as he discovered the theory of buoyancy.
