  1. Who has a curfew? What do you imagine will happen to your curfew when you go away to college? Will you still come home at 11pm?

  2. Basically, the colonists had “gone away to college” (colonies) and then the British decided to enforce a “curfew” (strict control). What made the British suddenly care????

  3. Why, in the first, place did the British government allow its colonies enough freedom to rule themselves?

  4. Reasons for Salutary Neglect by • the British: • Busy competing with France for • European domination. • B. Expected colonies to follow • mercantilist policies • C. Did not see reason to waste • money or soldiers on monitoring • colonists.

  5. D. Many colonists were loyal to the British anyway and proud of their heritage. (Think of documents from yesterday). E. Belief that enhanced freedom for the colonies would stimulate commerce and benefit them.

  6. II. What is salutary (beneficial) neglect? • Policy of neglecting colonies • Rarely enforced its trade • regulations simply because • neglect served British economic • purposes rather than strict • control. • HOW??????????????????????

  7. STOP AND JOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How will each benefit from the policy of salutary neglect? Great Britain The colonies

  8. C. First 50 years or so, almost no interference at all. How did the colonies develop with no help from Britain? D. Colonies developed trade with other colonies, and learned to SELF GOVERN through assembles.

  9. For example, a local governor appointed by • the king served as the highest authority. • He could • Call and disband the assembly • Appoint and dismiss judges • Oversee all aspects of colonial trade • ***The colonists were able to gain influence • Over the governor.

  10. E. Although may colonists were benefitting from trade with Britain, the overall goal was • for the colonial system to enrich Britain. • Mercantilism— • THE COLONY EXISTS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE MOTHER COUNTRY~ • 2. The colonies were • A market for British goods • A source of raw materials • A producer of goods and materials to be sold to other nations

  11. How did the British enforce Mercantilism? Let’s give a hand for HANDOUTS!!!!!

  12. How did the British enforce Mercantilism? III. Navigation Acts (1650’s-1770’s) • Various acts passed by Parliament to restrict colonial trade. • All trade must be done on English built ships. • All goods must be shipped to England or another English colony (outside of America)—NOT France, Spain, Holland etc…

  13. IV. Were the British successful? • Ways around—smugglers and privateers (pirates) had their own ships, in the name of England, stopped any vessel and stole its goods. • B. Further attempts to keep control • Colonial Governors, loyalty to the KING—but did not communicate with him.

  14. “We have an old mother That peevish has grown. She snubs us like children That scarce walk alone; She forgets we’re grown up And have a sense of our own.” Whose perspective is this from? What is the poet dissatisfied with? How do you know?

  15. In your opinion, which angered the colonists more The policy of mercantilism OR The policy of Salutary Neglect? Choose one and support your argument with TWO examples.
