  2. Today’s Agenda • Aim – to provide a brief overview of the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations and how these changes may impact • Agenda: • What is BS 7671? • Major changes

  3. BS 7671 • UK standard for electrical installation work • More commonly referred to as IEE Wiring Regulations – 16th Edition • First given BS connotation in 1992

  4. 17th Edition BS 7671: 2008

  5. Revision of BS 7671 • Is necessary to maintain harmonization with the International standard (IEC 60364) and the related European Harmonization Document (HD 384) • This will result in: • Renumbering • Restructuring • New regulations • Removal of some existing regulations

  6. Transition • Published Jan 2008 • From Jan to June 30th either 16th or 17th can be used • Designof all installations after July 1st 2008 to comply with BS 7671 – 17th Edition • Many changes...…Including…….

  7. Format • Made up of 7 parts • Part 1 – Scope • Part 2 – Definitions • Part 3 – General Characteristics • Part 4 – Protection for Safety • Part 5 – Selection & Erection of Equipment • Part 6 – Inspection & Testing • Part 7 – Special Locations

  8. Numbering • No dashes or zeros • 522-06-06 becomes 522.6.6 • Different system is employed for Part 7 – Special Locations • Examples • Regulation 701.415 relates to Bathrooms (701) and measures for additional protection (Regulation 415in Part 4) • 701.415.2 – Supplementary bonding from 415.2

Part 1 - Scope • New requirements for protection against voltage disturbances & electromagnetic influences • Testing & workmanship • 132.13 • Appropriate documentation • 134.1.1 • “Good workmanship by competent persons” • 134.2.1 • Inspection & testing to be carried out by competent person • 134.2.2 • Designer responsible for periodic testing interval

Part 2 - Definitions • Increase from around 170 to 250 • Including solar (PV) systems • Now includes “Competent Person” • “A person who possesses sufficient technical knowledge and experience for the nature of the electrical work undertaken and is able at all times to prevent danger, and where appropriate, injury to themselves and others” • Reference back to Part 1 – workmanship & testing • Same as found in Reg 16 of Electricity at Work Act 1989

  11. Part 2 - Definitions • The term phase becomes “LINE” • Direct & In-direct contact replaced • Direct becomes - “BASIC PROTECTION” • Indirect becomes - “FAULT PROTECTION”
