  3. Norms of Virtual Support • Minimize your outside distractions. • Be attentive and participate in all activities. • Keep yourself muted when not talking. • Notify the presenter if you are having technical difficulties by raising your hand. • Use the chat bar on your dashboard to ask questions.

  4. Meeting Outcomes Today’s session will allow you to: • Share and ask questions about your area of focus statement. • Prepare and share your experiences with the upcoming literature review. • Review upcoming module requirements and future support/coaching sessions.

  7. Area of Focus Statement According to Mills (2014), your statement should start with completing the following sentence “The purpose of this study is to….. (p. 70).”

  8. Area of Focus Statement The purpose of this study is to deepen students’ understanding of problem solving through the use of classroom discussions. Students in second grade struggle to explain how they solve addition and subtraction word problems and this study seeks to create a classroom community of learning that will provide students with direct access to ideas, relationships, strategies, and facts about math so they can effectively talk about their thinking and problem solving

  9. A Good Focus Statement Should Provide the Reader With... • Who: The participants who are involved. • What: The issue or change and intervention. • Why: So what? How does it impact learning? • How: A description of the process/intervention.

  11. Questions to Consider 1. Who are the participants? 2. What data will be collected and from whom will it be collected? 3. Is this an area over which you control and can make changes? 4. Is the topic manageable - not too narrow and not too broad? (Topic needs to be manageable.) 5. Are the outcomes measurable? How will the researcher measure them? 6. What does the researcher need to do in preparation – are there any skills that the researcher or his/her participants need to have before this change or innovation? 7. What do you expect to happen? Have you considered other outcomes?

  16. Helpful Tool • Google Drive as a way to share files and and documents outside of the course. • Folder created for each person accessible by you and PD Lead. • Use to store data, articles, etc… • Documents created using Google Apps uses no Drive space!
