  2. Marine Geological Samples Laboratory Repository for collections of Marine Geology and Geophysics faculty and staff Dredge rocks/ ROV Sediment cores Volcanic island and continental margin Sediment grabs

  3. MGSL Sediment Core Collection 1813 piston, gravity and box cores Majority stored under refrigerated conditions in d-tubes

  4. MGSL Sediment Core Distribution

  5. Sediment Core Storage at MGSL Split cores are stored under refrigerated conditions in d-tubes Core reefer capacity= 10,000 ft3 Currently about 95% full

  6. Expansion of core storage at MGSL Three 20’ refrigerated containers have been added outside of the MGSL and permanently connected to building power Added 2800 ft3 of racked storage

  12. MGSL Sediment Lab Facilities Air-driven core splitter New petrographic microscope With digital camera and monitor Portable x-ray machine Other facilities: petrographic microscopes, core photography, sieving lab, description and sampling tables

  13. Sediment core description database Filemaker input format

  14. MGSL Dredge Rock Collection 751 samples from 436 stations One of the most extensive collections of volcanic rocks from the mid-ocean ridge About 1/4 of ridge system has been sample at an average interval of 40 km

  15. MGSL Dredge Rock Distribution

  16. Dredge Rock Storage at MGSL Dredge hauls are stored in plastic and burlap bags Database keeps track of drawer locations for easy retrieval Current rack system is about 3/4 full

  17. MGSL Dredge Rock Facilities Sample prep lab Small and large slab saws Other facilities: petrographic microscopes, thin section prep magnetic separator

  18. Rock description database Filemaker input format

  19. MGSL Sediment Grab Collection 693 grab samples Majority from the northeast coast of the U.S., continental margin of Africa and some from the coastal zone in Iceland

  20. MGSL Grab Sample Distribution Iceland New England shelf African margin

  21. MGSL ROV Grab collection 103 grab samples Majority from submarine volcanoes and hydrothermal vents in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Sea

  22. MGSL Volcanic island and continental margin samples 6900 samples Active volcanic areas in: Western U.S. Italy Mexico Lesser Antilles Indonesia Iceland Greece

  23. Recent Distribution Activity at MGSL (Last three years) Sediment core collection 6010 Dredge rock collection 22 Volcanic island and continental margin 120 Grab sample collection 10

  24. Recent Acquisitions at the MGSL (Last year) 105 Sediment cores 3 Dredge rocks Volcanic island and continental margin samples 110 25 Grab samples 78 ROV samples

  25. Educational and Outreach Activities 1. Used for laboratory exercises in the following graduate courses: a. OCG540 Marine Geology and Geophysics (hard rock and sediments) b. OGG545 Volcaniclastic Sedimentation (hard rock and sediments) 2. Public displays of posters and samples have been developed for: a. Elementary and middle school classes b. Special visitors to the Graduate School of Oceanography

  26. Future Concerns for the MGSL 1. Lack of refrigerated core storage space (present repository is 95% full). a. temporary storage adjacent to facility b. construct an addition to present facility c. begin to shift cores into ambient storage conditions 2. Updating of repository website 3. New types of samples with special storage requirements. a. Dr. Robert Ballard (archeological oceanography) b. Dr. Kate Moran (geotechnical properties)

  27. Acknowledgements 1. Carla Moore NGDC/NOAA- maintaining and improving the NGDC core curator’s database and her help in finding additional resources for data managment 2. Marine Geology and Geophysics Division of NSF for long-term support of URI’s Marine Geological Samples Laboratory
