  1. The Bible Says Series… Studies in the Scriptures Baptism101 CHURCH OF CHRIST – 567 E. Walnut St. Jesup, GA – www.jesupchristians.com

  2. introduction What is “baptism”?- Who is to be baptized?- Why is one to be baptized?- Is any particular “formula/wording” mandated in scripture at baptism?- What if one is baptized for a reason other than the NT reason for baptism?- Should one be baptized again? Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  3. What is “baptism”? Defined: Vine’s Exp. Dictionary of Old & NT Words, p. 50, “…consisting of the processes of immersion, submersion, and emergence…to dip…” #907-910- Different Gk. words were used for sprinkling and pouring #4472,4473,4378,906,2708,1632,2022,- Col. 2.12 – buried & Rom. 6.1-4 - buried- Baptism is immersion, and scriptural baptism today is in “water”, and “for/in order to receive” the remission of sins for the proper candidates for such a baptism! - Acts 2.38; 8.36-39; 22.16; Gal. 3.26,27; I Peter 3.21 Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  4. Who is to be baptized? Those who need remission of sins/initial salvation (Acts 2.38; Mark 16.16; I Peter 3.21)- Those who want to be added by the Lord to the church/saved body (Acts 2:47)- Those who believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God (Acts 8:36-38)- Those who are willing to repent of their past sins (Acts 2.38)- Those who are willing to confess Christ before men (Rom. 10.9,10; Acts 8.36-38)- This would EXCLUDE babies & mentally challenged/not accountable… Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  5. Why is one to be baptized? To obey God (Acts 10.48; Mk. 16.16)- To become a child of God (Gal. 3.26,27)- To receive the remission of past sins (Acts 2.38; 22.16)- To put on Christ (Gal. 3.26,27)- To rise to walk in newness of life (Rom. 6.3,4)- To be buried with Christ (Col. 2.12)- To become a Christian/a disciple of Christ (Mt. 28.18-20) Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  6. Why is one NOT to be baptized? Because Christ was- To be put into any denomination- Because one is already saved/outward sign of inward grace- To please: Mom/Dad/Boyfriend/Girlfriend/Spouse/Friends- Because someone else will if I will- To become a member of a local church of ChristThere are no Scriptures on this chart since there are none to support the above actions. Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  7. Is there a specific “formula/wording” mandated in NT? Some contend today that we are to be baptized “in the name of Jesus (only)” and such is the wording that MUST be said over a person just prior to water baptism or the baptism is not scriptural- IF God intended some “baptism formula/wording” to be mandated, thus excluding any and all other “wording” that is in harmony with Scripture, how would we “know it” (Rom. 10.17)- We have no record of what anyone said at the time of baptism in the entire NT concerning the “one baptism” of Eph. 4, nor any command- It IS scriptural and advisable to properly/accurately state what is going on for ALL parties concerned! Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  8. Is there a specific “formula/wording” mandated in NT? NKJV rendering follows (not same wording in all translations):- In the name of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit (Matthew 28.18-20)- In the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2.38)- In the name of the Lord (Acts 10.48)- In the name of the Lord Jesus (Acts 8.16; 19.5)In every case (above and in examples of baptism) of scriptural NT baptism to put one into Christ, there is no “specific wording or formula or name that must be uttered” in order for the baptism to be valid. This is a law made up in church manuals and catechisms of uninspired men, not God. 2 Jn 9 Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  9. What if one is baptized for the wrong reason? An incorrect action is not a correct action (axiomatic)- Baptism for the wrong reason(s) is not a baptism that pleases God- Baptism for the wrong reason(s) does not accomplish God’s reasons- Does “baptism in the name of John” (Acts 19) make one a child of God?- What was the “solution” in the NT, for those who were not baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins, but had been “baptized” previously?- When someone today simply says “I have been baptized”, should we be concerned with asking “why” they were baptized? What “mode” was used? Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  10. Should a person be baptized again? It depends- If a person is baptized correctly, that action served the purpose God intended; if they were baptized incorrectly (fit subject, purpose or mode) they were not scripturally baptized and would need to be immersed properly to obey God Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  11. Mark 16:16 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.(ESV) Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  12. Acts 2:38, 47 38 And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. ESV Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  13. Galatians 3.26,27 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ESV Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  14. I Peter 3.21 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, ESV Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  15. Romans 10:9,10 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. ESV Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  16. Acts 8.36-39 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?" 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. ESV Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  17. Romans 6.3,4 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. ESV Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  18. Colossians 2.12,13 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, ESV Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  19. Acts 22.16 16 And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name. ESV Baptism 101 – www.jesupchristians.com

  20. conclusion Are we able to help others who have NOT been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins?- Can we help those who believe sprinkling or pouring is baptism?- Can we teach those who believe we are to be baptized because Jesus was baptized?- Can we correct those who believe we are baptized in order to become a member of a local church of Christ?- Can we teach one who has been baptized incorrectly of their need to be baptized as the Bible teaches?
