WHAT IS A LIMERICK? • Limericks are funny, five line poems • They contain hyperbole, onomatopoeia, idioms, and puns • The rhyme pattern is a a b b a – Lines 1, 2 and 5 have three beats and lines 3 and 4 have two beats • There are 7 - 10 syllables in lines 1, 2 and 5 - 7 syllables in lines 3 and 4

  3. What is a limerick Mother? It’s a form of verse said brother In which lines one and two Rhyme with five when it’s through And three and four rhyme with each other

  4. A flea and a fly in a flue Were caught , so what could they do? Said the fly, “Let us flee” “Let us fly,” said the flea So they flew through a flaw in the flue

  5. FINISH THIS LIMERICK • Limericks are often biographical – they talk about a particular person’s life. • There was an old man from Peru Who dreamed he was eating his______ He awoke in the night With a terrible ____________ And found out that it was quite_______

  6. WRITE YOUR OWN LIMERICK • Write a limerick about you, or someone you know. For example:- • “There once was a schoolboy named Jack” • “There was an old man with a beard” • “There was a young person from Gisborne”

  7. Now write another limerick. Here are some suggestions: • 1) a fly on the wall • 2) a man who thought he was Batman • 3) the incredible Wizard of Oz • 4) bursting or exploding • 5) bound for glory
