  2. The aim of the healthcare system is to achieve good health and healthcare on equal terms for the entire population.

Responsibility for health and medical care • The role of the national government is to establish principles and guidelines, and to set the political agenda for health and medical care. • 21 regions are responsible for healthcare services such as hospital care, primary care, psychiatric care and dental care. • 290 municipalities are responsible for the school health service, home nursing and service, elderly care and services to disabled persons.

  5. Income and expenses • Swedish healthcare is financed mostly through regional and municipal taxes. Regions and municipalities also receive contributions from the national level. • There is a maximum amount for how much you have to pay for healthcare in Swedish regions, for a period of twelve months. • high-cost threshold patient fee SEK 1150 • high-cost threshold medicaments SEK 2300 • In most regions, outpatient care is free of charge for children and adolescents under the age of 20 and for patients over the age of 85.
