Two-Minute Talk • Topic: Poetry (forms, structure, poetic devices, etc.) • How it works: • YOU talk for two minutes to a partner without a lull in conversation. • Talk about what you already know about poetry. Give me all you’ve got! • There is no “I’m finished” with one minute left. Keep it going until I call “Time!” • Each partner should contribute to conversation. Perhaps look at the timer to break it as evenly as possible (Each person talk for a minute).

History/Background • Chinese poetry has been a very important part of culture for thousands of years! • Chinese poets are big on using imagery to describe every day things and experiences. • In times long ago as well as today, it is an important cultural practice to write Chinese poetry using calligraphy, an ancient writing practice. • Chinese students long ago and today are taught to memorize and recite famous Chinese poems. How might these practices have been viewed during the Cultural Revolution?

  7. “Shi” Style Poetry Qinhuai: Miscellaneous Poems In past years heartbroken on the Moling boat, Dreams encircle pavilions by the Qinhuai River. After ten days of drizzling rain and wisps of wind, The misty scene of lush spring seems like remnants of autumn.

  8. “Shi” Style Poetry – Form & Structure • Shi poetry has 5-7 characters per line, 4-8 lines per poem. • 2nd and 4th line usually rhyme, and sometimes the 1st as well • First two lines set the scene, 3rd line provides a twist/conflict • The last line is the poet’s thoughts/conclusion or offers advice to the reader

Your Shi Poem • 4-8 lines long • Includes a prominent example of imagery • Includes an interpretation or image from one of the following scenes from Red Scarf Girl • Jiang Ji-Li’s experience in the school yard with the wildflower (70-71). • The sounds/sights of the neighborhood during house searches (80-85). • Jiang Ji-Li’s experience with her grandmother’s silk (95-97).
