  1. PHILEO Refers to brotherly love and is most often exhibited in a close friendship. Best friends will display this generous and affectionate love for each other as each seeks to make the other happy.

  2. There are three levels of friendship: • Casual friends • Good friends • Close friends

  3. When you’re down and troubled, and you need some love and care, and nothing, nothing is going right. Close your eyes and think of me, and soon I will be there to brighten up even your darkest night. You just call out my name and you know wherever I am I’ll come running, to see you again. Winter, spring, summer or fall, all you have to do is call and I’ll be there, You’ve Got a Friend”

  4. The sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love (phileo) is sick.” John 11:3 (NIV)

  5. 1 Samuel 18:1 & 3 (NIV) 1“After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. 3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself”

  6. Three keys to maintaining this type of close friendship, a PHILEO friendship • Availability • Investment • Accountability

  7. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV) 9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: 10 If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

  8. The Value of a Close Friend • Partnership (verse 9) • Assistance (verse 10) • Compassion (verse 11) • Safety (verse 12)
