• Introduction. Two words translated “love” in Jn. 21:15-17, agapao, phileo. What is the difference between them?

• Jn. 21:15, “do you love me (agapao) more than these?” Because of what he said about them, Mt. 26:33. “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you (phileo).”

  4. Amor (Love) – Agapao - Phileo • “El le dijo: Apacienta mis corderos”. Luc. 22:32, “y tú, una vez vuelto, confirma a tus hermanos”. • “He said to him: Feed my lambs.” Lk. 22:32, “when you have returned, strengthen your brethren.”

  5. Amor (Love) – Agapao - Phileo • Jn. 21:16, Segunda vez, “¿me amas (agapao)?” Otra vez: “tú sabes que te quiero (phileo)”. “Pastorea mis ovejas”. • Jn. 21:16, Second time, “do you love me (agapao)?” Again: “you know that I love you (phileo)”. “Tend my sheep.”

  6. Amor (Love) – Agapao - Phileo • Tercera vez: “¿me quieres (phileo)?” • Third time: “do you love me (phileo)?” “Peter was grieved… you know all things; you know that I love you (phileo).” “Feed my sheep.”

  7. Amor (Love) – Agapao - Phileo • PHILEO, Amor emocional – afecto, relación personal y estrecha. Mat. 10:37; Jn. 11:3; Rom. 12:10 “sed afectuosos”; 16:16 “beso santo”; Tito 2:4; 3:15; 1 Ped. 3:8. Amor de AFECTO. • PHILEO, Emotional love – affection, close personal relationship. Matt. 10:37; Jn. 11:3; Rom. 12:10 “be affectionate”; 16:16 “holy kiss”; Titus 2:4; 3:15; 1 Ped. 3:8. Love of AFFECTION.

Mat. 10:37; Jn. 11:3, 36. • Phileo = emotional love, the reaction of the heart to what gives pleasure, to what pleases. Mat. 10:37; Jn. 11:3, 36.

• Jn. 3:16 does not say that God loved (phileo) the world, but He does love (phileo) the disciples of Christ (Jn. 16:27). Mat. 5:44 does not command us to love (phileo) our enemies.

• Agapao, the love of intelligence, reason and the will; the love that evaluates and esteems; the love of purpose, unselfish, willing to serve and seek the best interest of others.

• Lk. 7:47, “loved much,” she was full of good will and exhibited it, v. 44-46… Jn. 3:16, God, full of good will and exhibited it in giving His Son to save us.

• With this love God did love the world of sinners (Jn. 3:16) and with this love we can love our enemy (Matt. 5:44). It is a more elevated love (love of the intellect and of the will).

• Agapao refers to the love produced because of the value of the object loved, the sense of its value. Gen. 1:26; Matt. 10:28; 16:26: 1 Pet. 4:8, “have fervent love for one another.”

  14. Amor (Love) – Agapao - Phileo • Pedro siempre mostraba amor emocional hacia Cristo. Mat. 14:28, quería estar con El; Mat. 17:4 quería honrarle; Jn. 21:7, “se echó al mar” para ir a Jesús. No se puede negar que le “quería”. • Peter always showed emotional love for Christ. Mt. 14:28, wanted to be with Him; Mt. 17:4, wanted to honor Him; Jn. 21:7, “plunged into the sea to go to Him. Can’t deny that he “loved” Him

  15. Amor emocional y servicial Love- emotional and serving • Mat. 26:35, “morir contigo”; Luc. 22:33, “ir contigo a la cárcel.. a la muerte”. No eran palabras vanas, Jn. 18:10. • Matt. 26:35, “die with you”; Lk. 22:33, “go with you both to prison and to death.” These were not vain words, Jn. 18:10. But emotional love is not sufficient – he denied Him three times!

• Now in Jn. 21:15-17 Peter learns the difference. Love has to be be loyal and to serve. The love of Peter in Acts is of the intellect and will. It’s love that serves and sacrifices.

  17. Amor emocional y servicial Love- emotional and serving • Muchos jóvenes no aprenden la diferencia. • Many young people never learn the difference. Much of what is called “love” is emotion, senti-ment (and even passion), instead of agapao-love. The consequence: the marriage doesn’t last.

  18. Amor (Love) – Agapao - Phileo • La tragedia de muchos matrimonios. Efes 5:25, 28 no dice phileo sino agapao. • The tragedy of many marriages. Eph. 5:25, 28 does not say phileo but agapao. Not the love of “I like”, but the love evaluate and esteem: “THIS IS MY PRECIOUS WIFE.”

• Likewise in the church, much of what is called “love” is only sentiment. Consequence: much carnality, “one another” texts not obeyed, there are dissensions and even factions.

• One feels secure thinking that he has “much love,” but he cannot endure trials, nor escape from temptations, nor solve problems – “emo-tional love” is foam without agapao-love.

• Sin and its consequences are minimized when there is just “emotional love.” There is more “love” for man than for Christ, the truth, right-eousness, the purity of the church, etc.

• Conclusion. We must learn and grow with the apostle Peter. He was a champion of “sentimen-tal love,” but later let’s look at his acts and read his letters in order to mature in agapao-love.

• It is a question, then, of GROWING, of not being content with the love of affection. We must climb to the level of the love of the intellect and of the will, to be like God and Christ.

• Christ knew that now Peter indeed would have the supreme love (agapao) even to face death for Christ, v. 18, 19.
