Goals for our Fifth Grade Year: • Mastery of fifth grade standards • To foster a love of math, science, social studies, reading, writing, and learning • To promote self-reliance and accountability • To prepare students for the academic rigor and social aspects of middle school • Expectations: We aim HIGH!

  4. Communication: • Students are expected to copy homework in the planner daily • Tuesday folders are sent home weekly; please return ASAP • Please review and remove papers on the “stay at home” side of the folder • Please sign and return the stapled packet of tests/quizzes on the “return to school” side of the folder • Message us on Class Dojo, or email us at any time

Reading Response Journal: • All fifth grade students will participate in the grade-level reading program, which fosters connections between reading and writing • To meet grade-level goals, fifth graders should read and/or write to respond to text daily • Students will write text connections in their reading response journal (RRJ) • Students earn charms for their necklace by completing RRJ entries and by meeting milestones (10, 20, 30, 40, etc. responses) Students who read, succeed!

Grading System: • “A” Grade = 90–100 percent • “B” Grade = 80-89 percent • “C” Grade = 70-79 percent • “D” Grade = 60-69 percent • Not passing = 59 percent and below • You can check your child’s grades on the Home Access Center (HAC) • Bring your ID card to the front desk to reset or inquire about your HAC access

Weighting Practices for Grades: • Summative Assessments: chapter tests, unit tests, final projects, research papers, presentations • Purpose: Assess student learning at the end of an instructional unit • Formative Assessments: quizzes, classwork, morning work, centers, choice boards, labs • Purpose: Monitor progress, identify strengths/weaknesses, drive instruction Summatives- 60% Formatives- 40%

  8. State Testing: Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) in language arts, writing, and math; Science will be tested with SSA (5thgrade only) One Resource test (Art, Music, PE) “Final Exam” Purpose: Assess students on mastery of Florida Standards Assessment calendar coming soon to the TCE website

  9. *NEW* District Testing: • iReady Reading and Math diagnostic tests • Purpose: Monitor progress, identify strengths/weaknesses, drive instruction • Each student receives an individual learning path based on diagnostic assessment performance • Headphones are mandatory • Three times per year (Aug., Dec., May)

Computer Use and Assessment: • Fifth grade students will take SOME classroom, state, and district tests online • Students will be expected to use a mouse to navigate inside tests, to select and/or highlight answers, and will need to type written responses • We will practice these skills in the regular classroom; Additionally, students will practice in the school’s computer lab during our resource rotation

  11. Fifth grade assigns homework in accordance with SJCSD’s policy: approximately 10 minutes of homework assigned per night, per grade level. So, 1st grade students are assigned 10 mins. of homework, 2nd grade students are assigned 20 mins. of homework… 5th grade students are assigned approximately 50 mins. of homework per night. • We assign meaningfulhomework to develop study skills, promote organization, and reinforce concepts taught throughout the school day. • Please contact your child’s teacher with questions/concerns, as necessary.

Best Ways to Support Your Child: • Reinforce personal responsibility • Review homework, as needed • Review notes and study materials with your child • Make school a priority- attendance is KEY! • Communicate with your child and with us; we are happy to help in any way we can! • Encourage your child to read daily, and let them see you reading • Resources are available on Edmodo • Review Class Dojo behavior reports, as necessary
