Types of Government Simulation Activity When I say GO, *Push all the desks to the back or sides of the room *Have your notebook, Notes Sheet, and writing utensil *Sit on the floor-When you sit on the floor, you have NO POWER as citizens of this Civilization As we learn about the 4 types of government in Ancient Greece, we will choose music to listen to based on the ways decisions were made in each government structure.

Monarchy • The earliest form of government in ancient Greece • one person-such as a king or emperor-had the power to make all of the political decisions • at first chosen by people • later inherited power passed on to sons • kings served as judges, religious leader, led armies • aristocrats: best, most wealthy, land owners • kings were dependent on aristocrats for counsel/advice • aristocrats realized that they were stronger that the king • eventually aristocrats took power leading to oligarchy • MONARCHS LOSE POWER

Oligarchy • developed in Greece as an alternative to monarchy. • a few individuals have the power to make decisions. • ruled by small group of wealthy landowners • oligarch=Greek word “a few” • very comfortable lives while poor worked in fields • oligarchy abused power • ignored the needs of the poor and used army to make them obey • eventually, the poor found leaders who promised to improve their lives • backed by the people, the leader took power • OLIGARCHY LOSE POWER

Tyranny • Discontent with the oligarchy in ancient Greece led to the rise of new leaders, called tyrants. • one person takes power by force/not a lawful king=tyrant • mostly military leaders who got support from the poor and unhappy people • tyrants rule became unbearable people of Athens forced them from power • TYRANTS LOSE POWER

This was the beginning of democracy. • In a democracy, people vote to make political decisions. • Class vote • We will play the song that receive more than half of the votes.
